Jeddah's vibrant and growing food scene has a brand new addition - Capis.
One of the newest dining destinations to have opened in Jeddah's Al-Naeem district, Capis is homegrown gem. The cosy four-seater restaurant is serving up juicy burgers and hearty steak sandwiches that will delight local foodies, and have already made it a welcome new addition to the port city's dining scene.
Matching its cosy ambiance with its small, but mighty menu, Capis pivots on three main dishes: the classic Wagyu burger, a steak sandwich and a choice of either one, or two beef sliders. With the intoxicating aromas of cooking, this cosy restaurant is the ideal spot to enjoy a delicious meal while savouring the sounds of sizzling hot plates and lively conversations.
Despite having opened just a week ago, the place is bustling with customers and has a long waiting list.
As previously mentioned, the concise menu is characterised by a limited selection of staple items; a Wagyu burger, a steak sandwich or beef sliders. This smaller menu follows an emerging trend in the food and beverage sector whereby restaurants specialise in just a handful of dishes.
In my opinion, this approach really works. Not only does it underscore the restaurant's concept, it also surely reduces the overall costs for the business when it comes to ingredients, chef training, and kitchen size. Additionally, it also allows for a faster turnover of guests, as with a large menu, diners can tend to take a long time in choosing. But, a simplified menu ensures a quality dining experience as the restaurant can become experts in a select number of dishes, and can turn around these dishes quickly.
The Food
At Capis, the star of the show had to be the classic Wagyu burger.
A toasted yet soft, buttered pretzel bun is served with a generous patty of high-quality Wagyu beef cooked to perfection, the patty retains its juiciness inside whilst having a crispy outer layer. The rich, meaty patty is complemented with sweet, white onion slices, a generous amount of melted cheddar cheese, a helping of tangy pickle slices, and freshly shredded lettuce. The traditional burger sauce with balanced flavours is served alongside, which you can add to the burger to enhance the flavours, but in my opinion, it doesn’t need anything extra!
The other main choice on the menu is the steak sandwich. Also served in a soft and toasted pretzel bun, thin slices of tender Black Angus steak is placed within the buttered bun, topped with cheese and a special sauce. The steak sandwich is also accompanied by chimichurri sauce, a tangy and slightly spicy Argentine sauce made with fresh parsley, garlic, vinegar, and olive oil. This refreshing sauce is a perfect complement.
What is a burger without some sides? Capis has three side dishes: crispy and delicious French fries, thin onion rings, and the standout dish - fried kimchi! This is pickled kimchi coated in batter and fried, I was dubious but the moreish and salty flavour was incredible. As for the sauces, the waiter suggested trying all of them to complete the experience, and indeed, all three were excellent. The barbecue sauce was perfect with the fries, and so was the classic sauce. I recommend the truffle sauce if you are a truffle fan; it is creamy, rich and oh, so delicious.
The Desserts
For me, dessert is a must have. Similar to the main menu, the dessert menu is petite consisting of just two options; tiramisu and a freshly-made crepe. The waiter recommended trying the house-made tiramisu.
Tiramisu is one of my personal favourite choices for dessert, so I had high expectations. And thankfully the Capis signature tiramisu was perfection; importantly the soft, coffee soaked biscuits maintain their structure and balance the sweetness of the rich, whipped mascarpone - topped with a generous dusting of chocolate powder. For me, it was hats off to Chef Sama Jad, the creator of these delightful dishes. Of course, I ordered an espresso with the tiramisu to perfectly round off my experience.
Prices
With the menu being quite small and the ingredients being high-quality, the prices are relatively affordable ranging from SAR 14 - 45.
