Can smart beds really make the Gulf sleep better?

Can smart beds really make the Gulf sleep better?

As sleep tech becomes the latest frontier in wellness, Eight Sleep is rolling out its “smart mattress” concept across the Gulf. Fresh off its UAE launch last year, the US-based company is now expanding into Saudi Arabia, introducing its sleep system to a region where sleep disorders are common and AC units are often overworked.

The company also unveiled the next-gen Pod 5, expected to land later this year. While the new model promises updated biometric tracking and even more precise climate control, its predecessor, the Pod 4, has already carved out a loyal following by reframing sleep as a data-driven, hyper-personalized experience.

Review

I’ve been using the Pod 4 for more than 6 months — and I’m not going back.

At its core, the Pod 4 is a temperature-regulating mattress cover that goes over your existing bed. It lets you heat or cool each side independently, making it ideal for couples with different temperature preferences. You can schedule it to warm up before bed, cool down during the night, and even wake you in the morning with heat, cold, or silent vibration.

But what really sets it apart is the tracking.

Each night, the Pod measures your heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), respiratory rate, and sleep stages — all without requiring you to wear anything. It tells you how long it took to fall asleep, how consistent your sleep schedule is, and how much time you spent in deep, REM, or light sleep, or awake in bed. It even flags respiratory and cardiovascular disturbances.

You get a sleep fitness score each morning, which helps quantify how well you slept — not just how long. If you’re someone who struggles with sleep or snoring (guilty), this kind of granular insight can be genuinely useful.

Sleep metrics tracked by the app on May 14 2025

It doesn’t stop there. The app lets you tag factors that may have impacted your sleep, like a late meal, caffeine, supplements, or an evening workout, so over time, you can start identifying patterns and building better habits.

Setup is surprisingly simple. The Pod is just a cover, with a hose that connects to the bedside Pod Hub filled with water. I had it up and running in less than 30 minutes. While I did face a few bugs in the app early on, those were resolved in a later update.

There’s even a tap-sensitive control strip on the side of the bed — a small detail that means you can shut off your alarm or adjust the temperature without reaching for your phone.

Eight Sleep also sells an optional adjustable base that can raise the head or foot of the bed, helping with snoring, acid reflux, or even just late-night scrolling. While I haven’t used the base, others swear by it — especially for reducing snoring, which can seriously impact sleep quality (for you and your partner!).

The Pod 5 isn’t cheap. Prices start at SAR10,823 for a king-size bed, plus a monthly fee for advanced analytics. But for those looking to take sleep seriously — not just track it, but actively improve it — this system delivers.

Whether Eight Sleep can convince the Gulf to invest in high-end sleep tech remains to be seen. In a region where extreme temperatures and sleep disorders are common, the Pod’s blend of biometric insights, comfort, and control might just be what people didn’t know they needed.
