Saudi Arabia will celebrate 2025 as 'The Year of Handicrafts'

This time last year, the Ministry of Culture declared 2024 as The Year of the Camel. And now, 2025 has been officially declared the "Year of Handicrafts," a significant move by the Ministry of Culture to revitalise and preserve the nation's rich cultural heritage.

This initiative aims to shine a spotlight on the intricate artistry and craftsmanship that have been passed down through generations of Saudi artisans.

By designating 2025 as the "Year of Handicrafts," the Saudi government seeks to achieve several key objectives. Firstly, it aims to empower Saudi artisans by providing them with increased support, training opportunities, and access to markets. This initiative will not only foster economic growth for artisans but also ensure the sustainability of traditional crafts for future generations.

Furthermore, 2025 and its designation as "The Year of Handicrafts" will play a crucial role in promoting the pillars of Vision 2030, through encouraging cultural awareness and appreciation among both locals and international visitors.

Through a series of events, exhibitions, and workshops, the initiative will showcase the diverse range of Saudi handicrafts, including intricate metalwork, delicate weaving, and exquisite pottery. This will not only preserve the cultural heritage of the nation but also contribute to the diversification of the Saudi economy by fostering a thriving creative industry.

The "Year of Handicrafts" promises to be a celebration of Saudi Arabia's rich cultural tapestry. By embracing its heritage and supporting its artisans, the Kingdom aims to create a more vibrant and culturally enriched future for generations to come.

The Ministry of Culture has launched a unique program called the "Crafts Hackathon."

This exciting competition aims to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation by encouraging artisans and creative minds to collaborate. Participants will work together to develop fresh ideas and approaches to promote and revitalise the Kingdom's rich heritage of handicrafts. The "Crafts Hackathon" presents a valuable opportunity to showcase the potential of traditional crafts in the modern world, ensuring their continued relevance and appreciation for future generations.

The "Crafts Hackathon" is not just a competition; it's a platform for creative exploration and exchange. By bringing together artisans with diverse skillsets and backgrounds, the program fosters collaboration and innovation. Participants will have the chance to learn from each other, experiment with new techniques, and develop commercially viable solutions for promoting Saudi handicrafts. This collaborative approach holds immense potential for the future of the handicraft industry, ensuring its sustainability and growth in the ever-evolving creative landscape.

WRTH Community

Organised by The Royal Institute for Traditional Arts (TRITA) a new community initiative was launched to coincide with the designation of 2025 as The Year of Handicrafts.

WRTH Community was launched on Saturday January 4, with more than six hours of hands-on workshops, lectures and discussions involving inspirational local leaders in the Kingdom's handicrafts field. This launch will play a crucial role in reintroducing and redeveloping Saudi's handicraft business or environment. The community aims to bridge the gap between the traditional and modern by integrating contemporary design and technology into the art of traditional Saudi crafts. Furthermore, WRTH fosters community involvement by encouraging participation from institutions and the local community to emphasise the cultural significance of these arts. By equipping artisans with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today's market, WRTH Community empowers them to continue these artistic traditions.
