As the sun sets over the Arabian Gulf, the streets take over from the beach as the focus of life in Dubai. From Dubai Marina to Downtown Dubai and further north in Deira and Bur Dubai around the Creek, families and groups of friends walk and talk, catch a bite to eat, or enjoy live music.
Whether you’re looking to party or just to take in the night air, Dubai is a superlative night-time city. And in summer, it is not uncommon to see families out until the wee hours enjoying the cooler air. Elsewhere, expats hit the city’s global branded restaurants and clubs. Note that many of these night spots require ID and smart casual dress codes are enforced.
1. Catch the Dubai Fountain show from a traditional abra
Watching Dubai’s world famous fountain from the promenade outside Dubai Mall and the terrace around the Burj Khalifa is so passe – why not watch it from the water? Operators offer traditional wooden abra cruises that provide a front-row view of the choreographed lights and music without the crowds. The show runs every 30 minutes after sunset until 11pm. Book ahead to avoid the queues. (Note: The fountains are currently being renovated but will reopen in October 2025).
2. Enjoy night swimming at the beach
Dubai has three dedicated and life-guarded beaches – Jumeirah 2, Jumeirah 3, and Umm Suqeim 1 – where night swimming has been permitted since 2023, and floodlights have been installed to illuminate both the beach and the sea. It can be a very atmospheric way to spend an evening with the lights twinkling from the coast and the waves lapping the cool sand. These are public beaches, so the usual dress codes apply.
3. Stargaze in the desert with a guided night safari
Watch the city lights recede and the stars come out over the dunes with an evening desert safari, which can be booked through a range of providers. You can either go as part of a group, as a couple or solo, although the latter two are much more pricey. Check what is on offer with a few operators before you go, as activities, timings and prices can vary, although most offer the expected fireside dinners, camel rides and falconry. Others really lean into stargazing with telescopes and expert guides.
4. Watch the skyline from The Lounge at Burj Khalifa
Skip the crowds at the observation deck and book an evening at The Lounge, the highest bar in the world. It’s quiet, atmospheric and serves surprisingly good canapés. Arrive around 6:30pm for golden hour and stay as the city shifts into full glow. If you want a more formal sit down meal, At.mosphere restaurant is located on floor 122.
5. Try a late-night swim at a beach club
Many of Dubai’s top beach clubs stay open after dark, especially in cooler months. Drift Beach has live DJs and views of the marina skyline and is open until midnight, and Summersalt keeps it refined with poolside service and sea views. Check dress codes and age restrictions before you go, and bear in mind that many high-end venues have minimum spends. You can also watch the world go by from the world's highest infinity pool at AURA until 11pm.
6. Watch an immersive show at La Perle
This gravity-defying acrobatic water show runs most nights and is Dubai’s answer to Cirque du Soleil. The stage floods, tilts and spins – and so do the performers. Book early for front-row seats and a pre-show dinner at one of the nearby restaurants.
7. Visit a rooftop cinema under the stars
Catch a film under the stars at VOX Moonlight. You can select either beanbags or couches and try not to be distracted as the skyline glows behind the screen. If you’re feeling peckish, just order food from your seat. The outdoor cinema closes during the peak summer months and booking is essential.
8. See art installations at Alserkal Avenue
The Alserkal district opens until 10pm on selected nights during the year for after-dark gallery hopping, live music, film screenings and food trucks. It’s an edgier alternative to Dubai’s glitzy nightlife, with warehouse vibes and contemporary art, and definitely not to be missed. Another highlight is the first independent cinema in the GCC, Cinema Akil.
9. Tee off with a game of night golf
When the sun goes down, the floodlights come on at Dubai’s golf clubs, allowing punters to take to the green under the lights and with dazzling city views. Emirates Golf Club is the only floodlit 18-hole course and was designed by six-time major winner, Sir Nick Faldo, so is a challenging championship-standard game. There is also a Par 3 course at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club.
10. Take a spin on the world's largest and tallest ferris wheel
Check out 360-degree views of the city from the world’s tallest observation wheel, with the option to either share a cabin with others or – for top romance points – book a private cabin for you and your significant other. At 250 metres tall, Ain Dubai is long enough to fit 15 London buses, while the weight of the total project is equivalent to four A380 planes.
11. Enjoy the sights and sounds of Dubai's first dedicated jazz destination
Jass Lounge is the latest hip spot for live music in Dubai, with performances every night, excellent vibes and a great location at the heart of the Dubai International Finance Centre. Jass is open until 2am from Sunday to Thursday and 3am on weekends, and really gets going late. There is a dress code and when famous names are on the line-up, book well in advance.
