Exploring new destinations and learning about new cultures has become my favourite thing to do.
My most recent trip was to Qatar; a captivating blend of ancient traditions and modern marvels, and from my experience recently offers a unique experience for every visitor, it was mesmerising. From exploring its rich history and modern architecture, to indulging in world-class shopping and top-notch dining, Doha in particular has so much to see and do.
Here are three must-do activities to make your first visit unforgettable:
1. Visit the National Museum of Qatar
The National Museum of Qatar is a stunning site that displays the history and culture of the nation. Its distinctive design by the French architect Jean Nouvel, is inspired by a desert rose.
Visitors can examine a variety of displays that tells Qatar's history from past to present. The museum is a fascinating site to learn about and experience Qatar's rich legacy including the beginning of civilisation, the type of animals that existed, and still exist, traditional clothing, and my most favourite part, the history of pearling in Qatar.
2. Wander around the Souq Waqif
In my opinion, a visit to Doha isn't complete without a trip to Souq Waqif.
Lose yourself in the bustling Souq Waqif, a traditional heritage marketplace that has been revitalised to offer a unique shopping and cultural experience. Open daily, it is the perfect place to wander; walk through the narrow alleyways lined with colourful shops selling everything from spices and textiles to traditional Qatari handicrafts. Throughout the year, a number of interesting and cultural events take place here, from the Date Convention, mango celebrations and even circus performances.
3. Grab a Coffee in Harrods Tea Room
A little corner of London found in the heart of Msheireb Downtown Doha, this elegant tea room offers guests a world-class afternoon tea experience. Or grab coffee if you're that way inclined! The stunning interiors and décor of the tea room will transport guests to the heart of London, promising a memorable afternoon tea experience in the city's innovative urban development project that seamlessly blends traditional Qatari architecture with modern sustainability practices. It's the world's first sustainable downtown regeneration project, aiming to create a vibrant and eco-friendly city centre.
4. Take in the different landscapes of Doha as you drive to lunch
I had the pleasure of test driving the newly redesigned GV70 Genesis when visiting Doha, and I decided to take it for a spin to a recommended lunch spot, just outside of the city. rom the heart of the city to the picturesque landscape of the dessert.
Right after breakfast, I headed out and enjoyed the smoothness of the GV70 on the roads. Next up on my agenda was lunch, my mind is always on the next tasty meal! About an hour and a half outside of the city, we headed for Habitas Ras Abrouq. An enjoyable journey, this trip took me along the edges of the coast, offering incredible views of the sea and also the desert, the perfect combination.
At Habitas Ras Abrouq, we indulged in a delicious lunch at Qissa; incredible views were met with amazing company, and a selection of delicious and freshly made dishes.
5. The Pearl Island
The Pearl Qatar is a must-visit place on the list, whether during the day or at night. The man-made island features several areas with beautiful waterfront promenades and beaches. I enjoyed the views of the boats and yachts while strolling and exploring the Porto Arabia district. For those looking to shop, there are 360 retail shops with several high end boutiques like the Lebanese fashion designer, Zuhair Murad, and Chopard boutique, to name a few. If you get hungry, there are over 90 restaurants and cafes to choose from in the area. To fully enjoy your experience, I recommend visiting The Pearl a few times during your stay in Doha, if you can.
