AlUla Moments has confirmed the return of the AlUla Skies Festival for 2026.
From November 6 to 15, AlUla Skies Festival invites visitors to enjoy and experience 10 days of aerial adventures, dark-sky astronomy, and desert wellness in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
Set against the backdrop of the region's ancient sandstone canyons and UNESCO World Heritage sites, the annual event centres on sunrise hot-air balloon flights over Hegra, illuminated evening shows, and deep-space stargazing in one of the world's most unique, certified Dark Sky Park, which has been expertly timed to coincide with two phenomenal celestial experiences, including a moonless window and the peak of the Leonid Meteor Shower.
The event is built around three core pillars — nature, adventure, and astronomy, giving visitors a unique vantage point to experience the region's ancient geology both from high above and beneath dark, pristine night skies.
Dawn Flights and Illuminated Nights
An unmissable moment of the festival's daytime programming is AlUla Skyrise, a daily collective hot air balloon launch taking place every morning between 6am and 7am. Guests begin their journey with early-morning transfers into the desert, greeted with traditional Saudi coffee and dates before boarding. Rising above the valleys, passengers take in panoramic views over wind-carved sandstone monoliths, palm oases, and ancient heritage sites. For those seeking a gentler ascent, the festival also offers tethered hot air balloon experiences, providing stable, accessible vistas suitable for families, first-time flyers, and photographers without requiring advance bookings.
As night falls, the energy shifts to atmospheric evening performances. The Hot Air Balloon Glow Show returns to two iconic backdrops: Hegra on November 6 and 7, and Elephant Rock on November 13 and 14. These open-air spectacles combine synchronised lighting, musical arrangements, fire performers, and aerial trapeze artists, culminating in a fully choreographed grand finale as tethered balloons glow like giant paper lanterns against the desert darkness.
A Prime Window for Dark Sky Stargazing
The 2026 festival timing coincides with a rare astronomical window: a moonless calendar stretch from November 7 to 12, anchored by a New Moon on November 9. With virtually no moonlight interference, conditions will be exceptional for deep-space observation. The event also aligns with the peak of the Leonid Meteor Shower on November 15, where observers can expect to view up to 20 shooting stars per hour streaks across the desert firmament.
A series of guided astronomy sessions will take place at the historic AlUla Fort on select dates (November 6–7, 10–12, and 13–15). With five professional-grade telescopes, guided observations are led by trained astronomers working alongside a traditional Rawi (storyteller), bridging scientific star mapping with Arabian folklore, ancient navigation tales, and cultural history. Beyond the fort, night-time guided hikes organised with adventure operator Husaak lead small groups into narrow slot canyons and elevated ridge lines to experience the quiet majesty of the desert under dark skies.
Preserving the Night and Nurturing Mindful Travel
The festival highlights AlUla’s status as home to the region's first Dark Sky Park designations. With four protected areas officially accredited by Dark Sky International — including the AlGharameel Nature Reserve, Sharaan National Park, and Wadi Nakhlah Nature Reserve — AlUla continues to set benchmark standards for light pollution control, habitat preservation, and eco-conscious tourism across the Middle East.
Complementing the outdoor adventures is a slate of cultural and wellness programming. VOX Moonlight Cinema will run outdoor film screenings at Our Habitas AlUla throughout the 10-day festival. For personal renewal, Sunset Stillness wellness sessions on November 13 and 14 will offer guided meditation, sound bath immersion, and conscious breath-work framed by the evening light against the canyon walls.
