Makkah unveils mega-development to host 900,000 worshippers near Grand Mosque

The launch of the King Salman Gate will be a pivotal milestone moment in Saudi Arabia’s strategic vision for the future of Makkah.

As the Kingdom strives to accommodate an ever-increasing number of pilgrims for Hajj and Umrah, the existing infrastructure around the Grand Mosque requires a generational upgrade. This mega-project, which upholds the Kingdom's Vision 2030 plans, announced by the Crown Prince, directly addresses this need by providing world-class urban planning that prioritises comfort, convenience, and spiritual fulfilment.

The two Holy Mosques — the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah — stand as the primary draw for visitors to Saudi Arabia. In September, it was confirmed that both locations saw a combined attendance that reached an astonishing figure in Safar 1447 AH, with more than 52 million worshippers and Umrah pilgrims visiting in a single month. Of this total, $21.4$ million people went to the Grand Mosque (including $7.5$ million Umrah performers), and $20.6$ million visited the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, with $1.2$ million gaining entry to the revered Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifa.

What is the King Salman Gate Project?

The King Salman Gate is a monumental, mixed-use urban development project launched by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, situated immediately adjacent to the Grand Mosque (Al-Masjid Al-Haram) in Makkah.

Spanning a vast gross floor area of 12 million square meters, the project is far more than a simple expansion; it is an integrated ecosystem designed to elevate the experience of the millions of pilgrims and visitors who travel to Islam's holiest city each year. Developed by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) subsidiary, RUA AlHaram AlMakki Company, the Gate is a landmark initiative under the ambitious Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the Kingdom's economy and accommodate 30 million pilgrims annually by the end of the decade.

By blending state-of-the-art modern architecture with a respectful preservation of Makkah's rich cultural identity, the King Salman Gate is set to establish a new global benchmark for sustainable, integrated urban development centred around a sacred site. The initiative not only aims to enrich the visitor's spiritual journey but also serves as an economic engine, expecting to generate over 300,000 jobs by 2036, further supporting the goals of Vision 2030.
