In a move that signals the growing influence of technology in the Middle East, tech giant Apple has announced its intention to expand into Saudi Arabia in the form of brick-and-mortar stores, for the very first time.
The tech company will establish both a dedicated online presence in addition to physical retail stores in the Kingdom, marking a significant milestone in its global expansion strategy.
The company's Saudi Arabian online store is set to launch in the summer of 2025, providing Saudi consumers with direct access to Apple's full range of products and services. This digital platform will offer convenience and a seamless shopping experience, catering to the increasing number of online shoppers in the region.
Following the online launch in 205, Apple plans to open physical stores in Saudi Arabia in 2026.
A particularly noteworthy store location will be Diriyah, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where Apple is reported to already be in talks to establish an iconic store that reflects the brand's commitment to design and innovation.
To foster local talent and innovation, Apple has already established a Developer Academy in Riyadh. This initiative was brought to life in partnership with the Saudi government, Tuwaiq Academy, and Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University. The programme aims to empower Saudi developers and entrepreneurs by providing them with the necessary skills and resources to create cutting-edge apps and software. Since its launch in the region in 2021, the Developer Academy has seen almost 2000 students complete the training, and are now working in publishing applications via the Apple App Store.
Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said: “Our teams are looking forward to deepening our connections with customers, and to bringing the best of Apple to help people across this country (Saudi Arabia) explore their passions, build their businesses, and take their ideas to the next level.”
Further bolstering the tech company's commitment to Saudi, Apple Pay is available across the Kingdom, offering a secure and convenient payment solution. For example, Apple Pay is officially available to use on the newly opened Riyadh Metro. This payment integration aligns with the Kingdom's vision of becoming a cashless society and embracing digital technologies.
Apple's expansion into Saudi Arabia is poised to have a profound impact on the country's tech ecosystem. By bringing its innovative products and services to the market, Apple will not only cater to consumer demand but also stimulate economic growth and job creation.
As the tech giant continues its global expansion, its entry into Saudi Arabia represents a significant step forward, solidifying its position as a dominant force in the technology industry.
