A new global survey reveals that young travellers aged 5 to 12 are looking for experiences that go beyond the ordinary: their ideal holiday isn’t just about sightseeing or downtime; it’s about adventure, imagination, and making connections that matter.
Research commissioned by Experience Abu Dhabi surveyed over 7,000 children and their parents across nine countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the UK, US, Germany, France, Italy, India, and China. While preferences varied by region, one theme stood out: kids want to follow their passions. Whether it’s diving into their favourite film worlds, stepping into imaginative roles, or trying something brand new, their ultimate holiday is shaped by curiosity and creativity.
Connection plays a crucial role in shaping these dream vacations, with 90% of kids saying they want activities that allow them to make new friends. From shared adventures at waterparks to bonding over creative storytelling sessions, kids are eager to meet peers from different cultures and backgrounds. Additionally, 95% of kids are influenced by what their friends have done, showing that social experiences shape travel choices.
Beyond friendships, 89% of young travellers want holidays that feel like stepping inside their favourite movies or video games. Whether it’s speeding down a racetrack, exploring an enchanted castle, or venturing into the wilderness, kids are seeking interactive escapades that let them bring their imagination to life. 85% want make-believe activities, dreaming of roles like astronauts, race car drivers, or wildlife explorers, proving that play and adventure remain central to their idea of the perfect holiday.
While each country revealed distinct preferences — UAE kids prefer big thrills, German children love food markets, and British kids want stories to share — the research uncovered one universal truth: family time remains at the heart of travel. 97% of kids said that having fun moments with their families is a must, reinforcing that shared experiences matter more than ever.
