Discover why Sri Lanka's southern coast is a hidden gem for Saudi travellers

Sri Lanka is renowned for its breathtaking inland hills, dense jungles, and tea plantations, but its south coast is also teeming with vibrant new spots to explore, stay, and dine.

Just over 5 hours and 30 minutes from Riyadh, and 6 hours 30 minutes from Jeddah, Sri Lanka is an easy to get to destination from Saudi. There are more than 15 direct flights from both Saudi cities, making the south-east Asian country the ideal escape with children, and for a short amount of vacation time.

Journey from former fishing villages to bustling seaside towns to discover hidden beaches, top-notch surfing and yoga spots, and mesmerising sunsets. Embrace the charm of slow living as you delve into this captivating region.

Where to Stay

Merchant House, Ahangama

Loosen up, unwind, and disconnect from the fast-paced life. This fully staffed four-bedroom villa offers a retreat where you can sunbathe by the pool and soak in the relaxed vibes, with nearby surfing just a stone’s throw away. Nestled in the jungle, it’s only 300 metres from a secluded beach. Enjoy freshly cut fruit, tea, and coffee served throughout the day, thanks to the attentive service of the house managers.

Although breakfast isn’t included, a delightful walk through the village to The Kip, the sister property, will reward you with a delicious tapas-style morning meal made from locally sourced ingredients, all set amid a lush jungle. I highly recommend this accommodation for its cosy, private house feel, making it the perfect place to come back to after a busy day of exploring.

Eraeliya Villas & Gardens, Weligama

This oceanfront boutique resort in Weligama features six uniquely designed villas that embody Palladian architecture, art, and a slow lifestyle. Tropical gardens, an infinity pool, and scenic beach views at sunset create an enchanting atmosphere.

Each villa is adorned with artworks and handcrafted pieces, ensuring a movie scene experience for guests. I recommend booking one of the villa suites, which comes with its own private terrace by the pool. Indulge in a soothing massage with Lanka, who uses the hotel’s own locally sourced massage oils, available for purchase. Just a few steps away, you’ll discover a sheltered strip of beach with perfect surf spots. The infinity pool offers incredible views of palm trees and the ocean, making it an ideal spot to unwind and watch surfers catch some waves.

What To Do

Day trip to Galle

Explore the historical city of Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its colonial architecture, charming streets, and vibrant markets. Start your day early at Galle Fort to beat the heat and enjoy the serene morning atmosphere. Stroll through the fort and discover local boutiques brimming with clothes, art, and souvenirs. For lunch, head to AQUA Pizza – if you fancy a delicious break from the undeniably delicious local cuisine. Right across the street, you’ll find Karma Collection, a local brand offering light cotton clothes with vibrant prints handmade in Sri Lanka, along with a collection of beautiful artworks.

Don’t miss the chance to grab some famous Ceylon cinnamon, celebrated for its health benefits, at Spices Hub and DP Ceylon Cinnamon. And before you leave, make sure to pick up some Ceylon tea. The Ceylon Tea Shop offers a fantastic variety of high-quality teas at reasonable prices, perfect for savouring the flavours of the south Asian country long after your trip.

Surfing

Sri Lanka Donna Al Sudairi Surfing

Sri Lanka’s south coast is a surfer’s paradise, attracting enthusiasts from around the world. Weligama is perfect for beginner surfers, offering gentle waves and a welcoming atmosphere for those new to the sport. On the other hand, Ahangama boasts more challenging waves, ideal for seasoned riders looking to test their skills.

For surf lessons, I highly recommend Ceylon Surfers, with locations in Weligama and Ahangama. Weligama is especially ideal for newcomers, providing a supportive environment to learn and improve.

Yoga

Sri Lanka Donna Al Sudairi Yoga

Yoga on the island nation is a deeply enriching experience, often practiced amidst stunning natural surroundings. Senses Yoga Studio & Retreat in Midigama offers an exceptional setting. The yoga shala is nestled in the middle of an organic fruit farm, providing a tranquil environment filled with the soothing sounds of birds and nature. It’s the perfect place to disconnect and deepen your practice. After an active day, yin yoga is the perfect fix for a stretch and total relaxation.

Beaches

The southern coastline boasts some of the most beautiful beaches, perfect for relaxing and unwinding. Beyond the famous surf spots, these beaches offer so much more. Whether you’re lounging on the soft sands, taking a refreshing swim, or simply soaking in the breathtaking views, you’ll find your perfect escape here.

  • Paradise Cove, Midigama: a bohemian chic beach club with lounge beds so comfortable, you’ll want to spend all day there.
  • Kabalana Beach, Ahangama: a long stretch of white sand with sun loungers for rent and a prime beginner surf spot with lessons offered.
  • Secret Beach, Mirissa: a secluded little lagoon at the bottom of a small hike, perfect for a tranquil retreat.
  • Dickwella Beach, Dikwella: long stretches of white sand and leaning palm trees, offering an epic sunset view.

Cooking class

Experience the flavours of Sri Lanka with a cooking class at Welle Gedara in Weligama. Shan, your host, offers an unforgettable culinary adventure where you’ll cook your own vegan lunch using ayurvedic cooking techniques. Each ingredient is fresh and local, with highlights on their health properties and benefits. Imagine scrapping coconuts to make fresh coconut milk and learning about ayurvedic practices.

The incredibly knowledgeable host runs a vegan restaurant with one table from his oceanfront home, which has been in his family for five generations. The warmth and authenticity of the setting make it truly special. This was the best meal we had in Sri Lanka, and we loved it so much that we returned for dinner. Just make sure to let Shan know you’re coming, as he cooks everything to order.
