The sunny south coast of Spain is a cherished summer destination for thousands of European and international tourists each year.
Personally, there have been countless getaways to this idyllic region, from childhood right through adolescence to adulthood; with a heavy draw being that of unreserved summer sunshine, endless public beaches and relatively affordable living, particularly when compared to other European destinations.
And luckily for me, this summer was no exception, as I once again found myself basking (and working) in the Spanish sunshine, exploring the charming coastal towns of Andalusia with my mother.
Location & Getting There
Known as the Costa del Sol, this picturesque stretch of coastline in southern Spain is renowned for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and as the name might suggest its abundant sunshine.
From Nerja to Mijas, San Pedro and of course Marbella, the cutesy towns and golden sandy beaches dotted along the sun-kissed shores of the Costa del Sol heave with throngs of tourists from around the world throughout the summer months, and even well into the autumn season.
Sitting on the edges of Estepona, just over an hour from Malaga Airport (and a stone’s throw from our usual Spanish haunt of Marbella), the METT Marbella is easily accessible whether you’re driving or Ubering.
Meet METT Marbella
A relatively new addition to the region, the METT Marbella Hotel & Beach Resort opened in August 2023 and has been quietly amassing a roster of regular visitors ever since.
Despite its name, the METT Marbella Hotel & Beach Resort is actually closer to the charming town of Estepona than its namesake, Marbella. This hidden gem town offers a more authentic and relaxed atmosphere compared to the bustling glamour of Marbella, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a relaxing getaway.
While self-described as a ‘5-star lifestyle property’, METT Marbella more accurately fits into the category of a well-rounded, modern, casual luxury resort. I have found that European star ratings can sometimes be perceived differently, especially when compared to the elite standards and expectations often experienced in the Middle East – we are truly spoilt!
Accommodations
The rooms at METT Marbella offer a minimalist yet chic, Mediterranean aesthetic.
With a focus on comfort and functionality, the paired-back decor, full-length windows and an open balcony, creates a bright and airy feel, even in the smaller standard rooms. The tiled floors ensure a cool and comfortable space, perfect for relaxing after a day at the beach.
The en-suite bathroom has everything you might need, from fluffy towels, bathrobes, slippers and even face cloths specifically for removing make-up alongside the usual suite of amenity kits, it also features a large walk-in shower.
A number of duplex suites and pool suites are also available to book, each thoughtfully designed accommodation provides a tranquil and inviting sanctuary for guests to unwind and recharge during their stay.
The Guests
Aside from its star rating, what you really need to know is that this hotel has it all; a large, sweeping swimming pool, direct access to beach and the blue azures of the Mediterranean, chic minimalistic rooms, a lofty lobby that truly sets the tone and a selection of dining options that will blow you away. Whether you're seeking a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a solo retreat, the METT Marbella has something to offer everyone.
Unlike the more established destinations of the Costa del Sol, the METT Marbella offers a refreshing and vibrant atmosphere. The resort attracts a younger clientele seeking a fun and relaxed adult getaway, far from the hustle and bustle of the traditional tourist hotspots.
The chilled-out vibe at METT Marbella is understated and inviting, the free, beachy feels appealing to those looking for a break from the mundane routines of everyday life. During my stay, I encountered a diverse mix of visitors, including small groups on quick European getaways, young couples, mothers and daughters, and even an international soccer team.
The Spa & Pool
Believe me when I say, its impossible to miss the pool. Smack bang in the middle of the hotel, the pool runs the length of the property until it touches the edges of the beach. With ample seating and sun loungers, the pool gets good sun, but also has shadowy corners for those who have had too much. Although it has a chilled ambiance from the early morning, the good vibes pick up in the afternoons with a resident DJ taking to the decks.
For anyone after a little extra holiday indulgence, the MOI Spa is a lush addition to your stay at METT Marbella. Escape the sun, leave the laptop behind and invest in some 'me-time' - you deserve it. With a full spa menu available, guests can choose from a selection of signature massages, rejuvenating facials, and wellness therapies.
The Restaurants
If you're like me, you appreciate (and thoroughly enjoy) good food, one my favourite things to do on vacation is to people watch and catch up with friends, over flavourful dishes.
During my visit I was pleasantly surprised by the dining options at METT Marbella, the on-site restaurants provided incredibly delicious options for breakfast, lunch and dinner, far exceeding my expectations of hotel dining.
From hearty Italian classics (and generous portions) at Isola, to quick Spanish inspired bites at El Bar de Lola, a selection of waterside nibbles and beverages at Azure Beach and the amalgamation of fresh Greek and Mediterranean flavours at Ammos, there is something for everyone, and options that allow you to truly sit back, relax and indulge during your stay.
Despite being located within the footprint of the hotel and just mere steps from each other, each restaurant offers a unique dining experience and curated ambiance perfectly accented with appropriate decor, and menus that showcase and celebrate the distinctive style and cuisine.
Exploring the Old Town
Perfectly positioned on the edges of the Mediterranean, Estepona is just over an hour from Malaga Airport, and within thirty minutes from the hustle and bustle of Marbella and Puerto Banus.
While Marbella is renowned for its glamorous reputation, a Cannes-type town if you will, Estepona offers visitors a more authentic and relaxed experience on the Costa del Sol. This charming town has preserved its traditional Andalusian character and proudly showcases its Moorish influences and flair with intricate floor mosaics and fortified city walls. The narrow, uneven streets have character that is rarely found elsewhere, each street is characterised by the different colours of hanging flower baskets, making the town an inviting place to wander.
The narrow, uneven streets of Estepona exude a unique charm, each street adorned with and characterised by colourful hanging flower baskets and white-washed walls. But timing is everything; the warren-like town truly comes alive at night, embrace the general hum of dining in the numerous plazas, the delightful shrieks of children playing and the awe-inspiring talents of local street musicians, the outdoor lifestyle embraced within the Mediterranean culture creates an inviting atmosphere for all, perfect for leisurely exploration or reflection. In addition to the old town, Estepona boasts an unending stretch of beautiful public beaches, here crystal-clear waters lap against the golden sand, and the town providing a peaceful beach escape from the crowds found in Marbella.
Although from the outside, a typically charming coastal town in southern Spain, Estepona has become a hidden gem for street art enthusiasts. A recent initiative to revitalise its urban spaces has resulted in a stunning collection of murals that adorn buildings throughout the city: the Ruta de los Murales Artisticos (Route of Artistic Murals) is a self-guided tour that showcases the best of Estepona's street art.
These murals depict a variety of themes, from local culture and history, to more abstract and contemporary art pieces. Some of the most notable works include:
"Día de Pesca" by José Fernández Ríos: This massive mural spans several buildings and depicts a fishing scene, showcasing the town's coastal heritage. "Estepona Bermeja" by Ana Cecilia Salinas: This vibrant mural celebrates the red earth of the Sierra Bermeja mountains and features references to chess. And
"Madre Amorosa" and "Mirada de un Niño" by a collaborative artist effort: These murals depict tender scenes of motherhood and childhood, adding a touch of warmth to the urban landscape.
Unlike other towns dotted along the Mediterranean, Estepona has managed to maintain its authentic charm and character despite its continued growth as a go-to destination for tourists from around the world.
In Short: With Marbella, Mijas and Nerja having had their time in the sun (so to speak) maybe it’s time to discover a new side to the Costa…? Lay by the pool, lounge on your balcony, visit the spa or allow the on-site restaurants invite you (and your tastebuds) to travel around Europe with flavours of Greece, Spain and Italy all in one place. Allow the chic, newly opened METT Marbella Hotel and Beach Resort be your first introduction to a relatively undiscovered, authentic treasure of the Costa; the sunny, shore-side, historic old town of Estepona.
