Captain Lauro Maresca was inspired to embark on a career at sea by his grandfather, who would take him to view luxury yachts at anchor near his hometown of Sant’Agnello, Naples. It sparked an ambition to lead and navigate vessels across the world's oceans as a ship Captain, where he could combine his love for the sea with a passion for leadership and technical expertise.
Captain Maresca began his seafaring career as a deck boy with MSC Cargo in 1994. After progressing through the ranks and various officer positions, he became a Master in 2006. On moving to MSC Cruises, he held the position of Staff Captain from 2012, and was promoted to Captain in 2016.
Having achieved his ambition to become a Captain, Captain Maresca’s aim has been to make a a positive impact through integrity, professionalism, and commitment to excellence at sea. He takes great pride in ensuring the safety and comfort of thousands of passengers and crew while navigating some of world's most beautiful destinations. He credits each voyage with bringing new challenges and opportunities to inspire his team, deliver exceptional service, and create unforgettable experiences for MSC Cruises’ guests.
Captain Maresca has been happily married to his wife Lucia since 1991. As well as a son, they have a daughter who also works for MSC Cruises, in our Excursions department, truly supporting the principle of MSC Cruises being a family company.

What does a typical day / morning look like at sea for a cruise captain?
My mornings begin before sunrise, with a review of the ship’s systems, navigation status, and weather updates. I hold a briefing with my bridge officers to align on the day’s navigation and safety priorities. Throughout the day, I oversee operations, support the crew, and ensure that we’re delivering a safe and smooth experience for all onboard.
What are the main responsibilities of a cruise captain?
Ensuring the safety of all guests, crew, and the ship is my highest priority. I am also responsible for navigation, communication with ports and maritime authorities, onboard leadership, and representing MSC Cruises in both formal and informal capacities.
How do you prepare for a day at sea? And a day at port?
At sea, we focus on weather routing, navigational safety, and onboard activities. For port days, preparation includes coordination with port agents, pilot boarding schedules, and embarkation and disembarkation logistics. Both require strong communication and flexibility.
How long are you at sea at any one time?
My contract allows me to have a balanced rhythm to fully dedicate myself while at sea, and recharge when I return home.
Currently, I’ve been onboard for nearly two months.
What do you do to unwind whilst onboard?
In my free time, I enjoy reading, sipping a good coffee, and spending quiet moments overlooking the sea. Occasionally, I’ll join crew or guest activities, which helps create a sense of community onboard.
What do you love most about being a cruise captain?
The ever-changing nature of the job: no two days are the same. Leading a team of professionals from all over the world and helping our guests create unforgettable memories is incredibly rewarding.
How has the industry evolved since you first began?
Cruising has evolved significantly. Ships are larger and more technologically advanced, and destinations are becoming more diverse and adventurous. It’s exciting to be part of an industry that’s always moving forward.
What are the most common questions cruisers have when they meet you?
They’re often curious about how the ship is steered, how we manage in bad weather, or what life is like as a captain. Many are surprised to learn how much planning and coordination happens behind the scenes.
What advice would you give to first-time cruise travellers?
Relax and enjoy the experience. Trust the crew — we’re here to take care of every detail.

You travelled around the world, is there one city or country in particular that evokes a special feeling every time you visit?
Dubai is a favourite of mine. The contrast between tradition and innovation, the impressive skyline, and the warmth of the people make it a destination I always look forward to returning to.
What is you most memorable interaction you've had with locals at a port destination?
I once received a spontaneous invitation to join a family lunch in a small Greek village. We shared stories, food, and laughter — an unforgettable cultural exchange.
Are there any hidden gems or underrated cruise destinations you recommend?
Salalah in Oman is a gem — rich culture, stunning nature, and fewer crowds. Kotor in Montenegro remains a favourite with its majestic fjords and medieval charm.
But I would also highlight Abu Dhabi and Doha. Abu Dhabi offers a quieter, refined elegance with world-class cultural landmarks like the Louvre and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Doha, on the other hand, blends tradition and modernity in a unique way — its souqs, skyline, and museums make it a surprisingly rich and rewarding stop for cruisers.
What are some of the most breathtaking destinations you’ve sailed to?
The Norwegian fjords are spectacular, especially under the midnight sun. Sailing into Dubai at sunrise is also always a stunning moment.
If someone wanted to plan a life-changing trip, where would you suggest they go?
Tokyo would be my top recommendation. It’s not just a city — it’s an experience that opens your mind and heart in unexpected ways.

What is your favourite meal on board?
A classic plate of pasta — simple, comforting, and full of flavour. It brings a taste of home wherever I am in the world.
Are there any home comforts (biscuits, chocolate etc) that you always take with you?
Yes, I always carry a bit of Italian coffee and dark chocolate. They’re small indulgences that make long days more enjoyable.
