A Guide to Rome: Discover the cinematic allure of the Eternal City

The iconic Italian film director, Federico Fellini once remarked that Rome is "the most wonderful movie set in the world," and it’s hard to disagree.

The city pulsates with history, culture and a sophistication that is simply unrivalled. Earlier his month, I was in the Eternal City for the Rome Film Festival, and more specifically for the Italian premiere of my new film Quintessentially Irish with Pierce Brosnan and Jeremy Irons.

The festival was as star studded as ever and Saudi Arabia was well represented at the premiere of Johnny Depp's new film, Modi, starring Al Pacino, which was co-financed by the Red Sea Film Foundation. Notably, the Foundation ensured that the - now award-winning - film benefited from a pilot programme where Saudi interns gained invaluable experience on set.

With direct flights regularly connecting Saudi to Rome, the allure of the Eternal City continues to enchant Saudi travellers.

As you immerse yourself in its elegance and beauty, remember that, as Fellini might say, each moment here is a scene worthy of an Oscar - and you might even spot an Oscar winner to boot.

Here are some of the city’s hotspots that are the pinnacle of opulence and style.

Rome's Star Studded Hotels

Bulgari Hotel Rome: A Contemporary Roman Jewel

The Bulgari Hotel Rome, the latest jewel in the Bulgari collection, redefines luxury by seamlessly blending modern elegance with rich cultural heritage, highlighted by an ancient statue of Emperor Augustus Caesar at the entrance.

Each room features beautiful mahogany doors and expansive bathrooms adorned with stunning mosaics. Guests can enjoy an all-day Arab breakfast, including shakshuka. The sumptuous spa and swimming pool offer a relaxing sanctuary with an indulgent set of Augustinus Bader products and treatments, complemented by separate sauna and steam rooms for women.

Its no wonder why A list stars, the likes of Zendaya and Priyanka Chopra have been spotted here, and if you're looking for a spot to stargaze, La Terrazza is the new hot spot and is open to non-guests, and it has breathtaking views of the city skyline.

Hotel Eden: Experience Imperial Grandeur

At the historic Hotel Eden, part of the Dorchester Collection, you can truly live like an emperor, which isn't surprising since the founder of the Roman Empire, Augustus Caesar once had his villa here.

This exquisite hotel, located just off the iconic Via Veneto, has been meticulously refurbished to retain its Belle Epoque charm with 98 stylish and spacious rooms, complete with walk-in wardrobes and stunning mosaics, evoking a sense of timeless elegance. Its rooftop breakfast is the best in Rome.

Ralph Fiennes was in town for the premiere of his new movie, Conclave, and was spotted in the hotel’s beautiful La Libreria’s lounge bar. Hotel Eden’s prime location makes it the perfect sanctuary from which to explore the nearby luxury boutiques of Via Condotti.

Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome: A Journey Through Time

Centrally located in the historic Piazza della Repubblica, the outstanding Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome offers an exquisite blend of luxury and history.

I recommend booking one of their luxurious Junior Suites for a stunning view overlooking the 16th century Basilica designed by Michelangelo. After some luxury shopping, the gorgeous Anantara Spa is the best place to indulge in an exquisite 90-minute Diocletian Bath Ritual (inspired by the nearby Diocletian baths) which includes a healing mud body wrap.

There were many celebrity sightings at its rooftop restaurant, Seen by Olivier, during the film festival. Make sure to stop by.

La Posta Vecchia: A Historic Retreat

If Rome handed out Oscars for hotels, the La Posta Vecchia would surely win Best Picture!

Just a short drive from Rome, La Posta Vecchia offers a luxurious escape steeped in history. Once the summer residence of J.P. Getty, the richest man in the world, this hotel is adorned with priceless antiques and opulent furnishings and its own private Etruscan Museum. The timeless charm of La Posta Vecchia has long made it a favourite getaway for celebrities, enchanting Sophia Loren and Jackie Kennedy.

Guests can start their day with a refreshing pre-breakfast swim in the stunning heated pool overlooking the spectacular coastline. A delicious breakfast with the best fresh juices I have ever tried, is served in an airy dining room, allowing you to soak in stupendous sea views, while lunch at The Cesar is truly a delight.

Rome's Culinary Highlights

Ineo in Piazza della Repubblica is the city’s hottest new restaurant, overseen by executive chef Heros De Agostinis. Its divine seven course tasting menu is already acquiring legendary status, and is a must-book experience for gourmands.

Il Giardino Ristorante on Via Ludovisi captivates with its panoramic views of Rome. But the most captivating experience of all will be at La Posta Vecchia where a private dinner can be arranged in the hotel's cellar surrounded by two-thousand-year-old ruins and mosaics.

Rome's Must Visit Masterpieces

The Botero Exhibition is showcasing the works of the renowned Colombian artist, Fernando Botero is wooing tourists at the Palazzo Bonaparte, adding a modern flair to the city's rich artistic landscape. Art enthusiasts have until January 19 to experience the largest exhibition ever dedicated to the artist in Italy.

Of course, no trip to Rome should be complete without a visit to the Vatican Museums, where the masterpieces of Raphael and Michelangelo await. Fortunately, they are not as crowded as they once were, allowing visitors to really appreciate their beauty, and the craftsmanship involved, without being jostled.

In the words of Alberto Sordi, the city remains "a big museum, a living room that shall be crossed on one's toes" - a perfect encapsulation of Rome’s timeless charm.
