Hotel Review: W Costa Navarino, Greece

Home to four five-star resorts and upscale private residences, Costa Navarino, in the south-west Peloponnese, is a fabulous option for those looking for a deluxe, tranquil Greek getaway with unspoilt beauty and a strong sustainable reputation. Whether it’s rest and relaxation, boosting those endorphins with your golf buddies, or trying something novel, your downtime here is sure to be rewarding.

The unmarred vistas, dominated by age-old olive groves and the crystalline Ionian Sea, alongside the region’s mythical connections and 4,500-year-old history, make every moment memorable. After all, this is where wise King Nestor, who appears in Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey, had his grand palace.

The Background

W Costa Navarino is part of the larger Costa Navarino development located in the pristine south-west Peloponnese region of Greece. The entire destination was the dream of local figure Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos, who was a passionate green campaigner. His main aim in creating Costa Navarino was to promote the Messinia region while strictly protecting and preserving its natural beauty and cultural heritage, giving the resort complex a strong sustainable reputation.

W Costa Navarino itself is notable for being W Hotels' Greek debut.

The Location

W Costa Navarino, W Hotels’ Greek debut, is the perfect choice for travellers seeking a serene, adult-friendly beachfront escape, where the “energy liberated” ethos ensures a revitalising stay and new outlooks.

Step into Welcome, the aptly titled lobby, and the resort’s character reveals itself immediately: stone walls inspired by regional architecture, sunlit spaces, and pockets of greenery everywhere. The grounds are filled with green walls and nearly 400 olive trees—part of Costa Navarino’s transplanting programme—making the 13-hectare property a joy to explore. Inside, playful windmill lamp shades, metallic art, and W’s signature scent set an inviting tone.

The Rooms

All 226 rooms, suites, and villas face the sea and have outdoor areas. The rooms come with bay, marina, or panorama views. The beachfront and rooftop suites and beachfront and garden villas have private pools and take outdoor living to another level. The Fabulous Infinity Swim-Up Room leans into natural materials—wood, reed, a crisp white-trimmed headboard—alongside playful lamp shades, a cream sofa with bursts of colour, and a tan leather armchair. The marble bathroom gleams with mirror details and standout fittings. The shared infinity pool is inviting, and the patio is where mornings quietly begin with coffee.

The Dining

While each of W Costa Navarino’s eateries has a unique spirit, they all have several draws in common: spacious outdoor areas, some perfect for fabulous sunset views, generous portions, lively settings, and tastes that linger long after your visit. That’s partly thanks to the locally sourced ingredients found in dishes like the sun-ripened heirloom tomato salad with feta and the region’s famed olive oil and olives.

Breakfast is served at Platía, inspired by a typical Greek town square. The different rooms, including a bakery, cafe, deli, and one where the cheerful chef happily whips up an omelette with everything, ensure your morning meal preferences are available. The restaurant also serves lunch, while the beachside Green Pepper is the perfect spot for a healthy brunch or light meal, with optional toe-dipping in the pool. From acai and coco fruit bowls to veggie flat breads and beluga lentils, it’s a vegetarian’s favourite.

Characterised as a beach club, Parelia is where you’ll find authentic Greek, mainly Messinian, cuisine with a creative twist, alongside cool beats and coastal, rustic-chic interiors. Executive chef Nikos Billis gives super-silky taramasalata a surprise spinach addition, while the daily catch fillet also comes with spinach, white beans, and bergamot, giving it a citrusy, floral, tart punch. While all platters are great for sharing, couples can add a romantic Lady and the Tramp-style memory with the seafood pasta.

The vibrant W Lounge is open all day, serving classics like Caesar and Greek salads, club sandwiches, and more. However, it mostly sets the scene for a fun-filled end to the evening. The vinyl records, ceiling centrepiece with glass pendant lighting and greenery, and stone and wood bar elevate the decor. And it’s easy to start bopping along with the DJ playing at the deck, especially when he’s deep into a vinyl session.

Foodies also delight in flitting between properties and experiencing the different options around Costa Navarino as a whole. Seafood enthusiasts should head straight to beachside Barbouni or BARBOUNAKI BY PAPAIOANNOU by celebrated fish maestro, Giorgios Papaioannou. Additionally, the likes of Santorre, which has a chocolate dessert that, like a memorable song, stays in your head, offer simple yet refined Mediterranean fare. For a taste of home, make your way to Nargile or Berytus.

Activities

For those wanting to make the most of the blue skies while keeping fit, golf is a primary attraction. Outings, including bike trips to beaches like Voidokoilia, a Natura 2000 protected area, hiking amidst waterfalls, and rock climbing can all be arranged. Additionally, staff can arrange visits to medieval castles, or fun group experiences, when available, including an embroidery workshop, cooking class with a local, and olive oil tasting.

W Costa Navarino’s expansive beach is perfect for resting or goosebump-inducing water sports thanks to the dedicated centre. The WET deck, overlooking the sea, is where lounging, swimming, and enjoying a break at the bar are all encouraged. The in-water chaise longues are great for keeping cool, while the stylish, round two-seaters seem to be made especially for catching up.

Alternatively, for some challenging fun with family or friends, enjoy some billiards, backgammon, chess, and foosball near the W Lounge.

Wellness & Spa

For times it’s best to head indoors, the FIT gym and AWAY Spa offer guests the ideal balance of fitness and relaxation. The signature detox body massage, using a rich blend of oils, including almond and “tranquility,” was immediately stress-releasing. With facials, soft sauna, Finnish sauna, steam room, and ice grotto fountain also available, there are rewarding options for everyone.

Sustainability

With the rise of innovative eco-friendly ideas like wind harps, Greece is bringing its A-game when it comes to sustainability. However, Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos had long been a passionate green campaigner, and when the local was creating his dream destination, a main aim was to promote Messinia while protecting and preserving its natural beauty and cultural heritage.

So, as well as being part of the biggest replantation programme in Europe, Costa Navarino incorporated bioclimatic architecture, local materials for building, and environmental and social responsibility through all the different development stages. Plus, there’s some renewable energy, a sustainable water management system, and recycling bins everywhere, including the rooms. The Navarino Environmental Observatory, a research and education hub, and Navarino Natura Hall, an interactive environmental exhibition centre, add to the commitment.
