What happens when a legendary designer creates a hotel he'd actually stay in?

Far from the spotlight of fashion’s runways, Christian Louboutin unveils a retreat where taste is tactile, luxury is instinctive, and every inch of Vermelho whispers the vision of a designer who built it not for guests, but only for those who understand detail as a form of devotion...

What happens when a legendary designer creates a hotel he'd actually stay in?

Fashion designers are now venturing beyond the runway, reshaping lifestyle through immersive experiences, from artfully branded cafés to opulently designed suites, and now, boutique hotels that translate creative identity into spatial form.

For legendary French designer Christian Louboutin, this evolution is more than a brand extension, it’s an invitation into his personal world.

Welcome to Louboutin's debut destination, Vermelho.

In Portugal’s quietly magnetic Melides, Vermelho reflects a cultivated sensibility and rare intimacy, where the rhythm of life slows to a deliberate, thoughtful pace. This relatively unassuming destination stay is not merely a hotel, but an autobiographical expression: where each antique, each tile, each thread of crimson has been chosen with deliberation.

Vermelho blurs the line between residence and reverie, standing as a testament to a designer who dares to slow time and place meaning above modern excess.

Connecting Sole to Soul

Translating to 'red' in Portuguese, the name of the boutique hotel — Vermelho — is a poetic and not-so-subtle nod to the iconic red soled shoes that have defined Louboutin's legacy in fashion.

The colour red has long been his signature, symbolising passion, power, and sensuality. By choosing “Vermelho” as the name, Louboutin ties the hotel directly to the essence of his design philosophy, while also honouring the vibrant hues and cultural richness of Portugal, a country he holds close to heart. It’s not just branding, it’s a continuation of the (red) thread that runs through his creative world.

Awarded two Michelin Keys and a member of the Relais & Châteaux collection since March 2024, Vermelho Hotel is a living archive and the ultimate designer mood board, it's what happens when a designer stops chasing trends and starts building legacy.

Every Detail Showcases Intimate Intention

Vermelho Christian Louboutin Hotel Portugal 5

Vermelho is a 13-room boutique retreat that feels more like a private residence, than a conventional hotel. Here each space is a reflection of Louboutin’s discerning collector’s eye, personal taste and global sensibility.

With custom Portuguese tilework sourced from the famed Azulejos de Azeitão workshop and handpainted ceilings, every corner of Vermelho has been carefully curated. Dark wood accents, antique furnishings and traditionally Portuguese architecture is juxtaposed against pops of Louboutin's signature red, Vermelho is a place where design is evidently deeply personal, where luxury is measured in detail and intention rather than in the indulgent trimmings of modern stays.

The hotel's thirteen rooms are each expressions of the designer's personal aesthetic, each crafted with a collector’s eye and a storyteller’s touch. Although no two rooms are alike, all share a seamless devotion to detail, artistry, and quiet luxury. Signature red accents — echoing Louboutin’s iconic soles — appear in subtle, curated forms: from embroidered linens to bespoke furnishings.

The bathrooms are sanctuaries in their own right, featuring heated marble floors, elegantly carved stone bathtubs, and the sensuous rituals of Kama Ayurveda products. Guests enjoy the convenience of well stocked minibars and Nespresso machines, while poolside moments are elevated with velvet-lined totes containing plush towels and straw hats, inviting long afternoons in the sun. As day turns to dusk, turndown service unveils its own ritual of hospitality, offering fruit baskets, evening tea served on private balconies, and handwritten notes that feel as intimate as the hotel itself.

Each of Vermelho’s rooms opens onto a private garden or secluded terrace, inviting moments of quiet and connection with the landscape beyond. Inside, the atmosphere carries the charm of a well-travelled friend’s residence, rich in character, thoughtfully composed, and resonant with personal stories woven through design, detail, and mood.

Haute Couture Meets Haute Cuisine at Xtian

A quiet triumph, Xtian is the culinary centrepiece of Christian Louboutin’s Vermelho. The restaurant takes its name from an abbreviated form of “Christian”, making for an additional subtle yet personal nod to its founder, that is found throughout the thoughtfully designed boutique hotel.

An intimate dining experience that encapsulates the same refined spirit found throughout the property. The restaurant was conceived as a tribute to Portugal’s gastronomic heritage, and elevated with the artistry expected of a designer known for detail. The dining room is softly lit, dressed in handcrafted tableware and quiet opulence, with subtle gestures to Louboutin’s signature red woven throughout the space.

Each dish is a study in seasonality and provenance: Atlantic-caught seafood, garden-harvested vegetables, and native coastal herbs are crafted into elegant compositions that honour tradition while embracing innovation. The dining room is intimate and understated, designed for those who appreciate meals that feel rooted in place and memory. With limited reservations and the restrained ambience, Xtian offers guests more than a meal, it offers a sense of place, plated with intention and served in the hushed tones of understated luxury.

Tables at Xtian are only available with prior reservation.

Wellness Designed with Intention

Wellness at Vermelho is centred around the hotel's serene spa space designed to offer guests a deeply restorative experience. This intimate spa blends sacred architectural elements, such as stones reclaimed from ancient churches, with the indulgence of French cosmetics and the calming influence of Indian mindfulness and traditional Ayurvedic techniques. The result is a tranquil environment where history and modernity coexist, creating a setting that nurtures both body and spirit.

The shared pool at Vermelho is a serene gem within the hotel’s lush and perfectly manicured gardens. Both of which have been designed to reflect the same quiet elegance and artisanal detail found throughout the property. Though modest in size due to local building restrictions, the pool is surrounded by comfortable sun chairs and umbrellas, and the pool itself is heated year-round, a rare luxury in Portugal.

Complementing the immersive spa experience and the shared pool, guests are invited to join complimentary yoga sessions every Saturday morning at 8am, led by wellness expert and instructor Ana Camilo in the hotel’s garden. For those seeking a more customised approach, private yoga classes are also available, designed to meet individual needs and aspirations.

Fashion's Quiet Evolution into Hospitality

As fashion extends its reach beyond couture garments and star-studded runways, a new era of immersive design-led hospitality is taking shape, one where couture sensibility meets curated space.

Visionary designers from across the globe are crafting boutique environments that reflect their aesthetic philosophies through tangible experiences: in cafés that echo ateliers, suites styled like editorials, and intimate hotels that feel more like sanctuaries of taste than commercial ventures.

For Christian Louboutin, this movement finds its most intimate expression in Vermelho, his debut hotel in the village of Melides. Here, he trades the theatre of fashion weeks for the tranquility of Portugal’s Atlantic coast, creating a retreat that speaks in antique accents, textured surfaces, and unspoken elegance. Vermelho isn’t a destination, it’s a mood, a manifesto, and a living extension of a designer’s cultivated world.

Top Tips

  • As Vermelho has just thirteen rooms, demand is high almost all year round, especially during the summer months. So be sure to lock in your preferred dates well in advance.
  • Although known to have relatively good weather all year around, those seeking Portugal at its most serene and sun-kissed will find the sweet spot in April, May, June, September, and October — these are the months that marry warm, inviting weather with the luxury of quieter landscapes, away from the summer’s peak tourist rush. It’s a golden window when the country reveals its most intimate charm, whether wandering coastal villages or retreating into places like Vermelho with the slow grace of the season.
  • Saudi Arabian citizens require a visa to travel to Portugal for tourism or short stays: this typically involves applying for a Schengen Visa, which allows entry into Portugal and other Schengen Area countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
  • From Lisbon Airport, Vermelho is approximately a 90 minute drive.  If you are planning on exploring more of Portugal during your stay renting a car is a great idea, however private transfers can also be organised and available from the hotel upon request.
