Travellers in search of adventure and luxury have had to venture to Switzerland and beyond for a once-in-a-lifetime train ride, but a new star is hitting the tracks in Saudi Arabia: The Dream of the Desert.
The Dream of the Desert is the Middle East's first five-star luxury train, unveiled in a collaboration between Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) and the Italian luxury brand Arsenale S.p.A. and slated to launch in fall 2026.
Dream of the Desert is not just a train; it is the epitome of luxury on rails. With 14 carriages and 34 opulent suites, the train promises an intimate and lavish experience across Saudi Arabia’s vast landscapes. The design, orchestrated by Aline Asmar d’Amman of Culture in Architecture, incorporates elements of Saudi heritage and contemporary luxury, mirroring the enchanting desert environment and rich cultural history.
Every detail aboard the Dream of the Desert speaks of sophistication and elegance. The suites are designed with a blend of Art Deco and modern Arabian aesthetics, featuring rich textiles, geometric patterns, and panoramic windows for unobstructed desert views. The communal spaces, including dining cars and lounges, reflect the traditional majlis style, offering a warm welcome with hand-carved wooden details and bespoke artworks.
Dining on the Dream of the Desert will include menus curated by renowned chefs showcasing a fusion of local and international cuisines. Guests can dine while enjoying vast, sweeping views of the Saudi landscape, making every meal unforgettable.
The route of the Dream of the Desert is designed to enchant, passing through historic sites like AlUla and Madain Saleh, and offering stops at key cities including Riyadh and Hail. The train will run along an already exisiting 1,300-kilometre route, departing from Riyadh and travelling with stops towards the north to Al Qurayyat, near the Jordanian border.
The journey is enhanced with curated cultural programs that connect passengers with the local heritage and customs, enriching the travel experience significantly.
