Seven stars. Thirty-five bespoke, lavish guestrooms. One luxury hospitality brand. And thousands of years of history.
The worlds of modern, indulgent luxury and rich heritage and culturally significant history, have collided as The Chedi Hegra has officially opened its doors.
Already a desert destination linked with unique and luxe stays, this groundbreaking project is only set to further elevate the AlUla experience for visitors, and this collaboration between the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) and General Hotel Management Ltd (GHM) marks a new era in AlUla's development as a global luxury destination.
Blending Heritage and Luxe Hospitality
The curated interiors and exterior of The Chedi Hegra, have been designed to offer guests a captivating blend of history, luxury, and breathtaking desert landscapes, all in one destination.
The hotel's 35 bespoke rooms are a testament to the seamless fusion of the ancient and the modern, with interior design elements purposely chosen to both embrace and reflect the natural surroundings and local heritage of the Kingdom.
Uniquely, The Chedi Hegra has been built to also integrate existing structures in the area – such as the Hegra railway station – which is now a intriguing feature of the hotel. Lime-based materials were used to fill the gaps in the masonry, ensuring the stone could breathe and bring it back to life for a modern purpose.
The team behind the build, in addition to the RCU and The Chedi parent-company, GHM, were dedicated to preserving the integrity of the region’s rich cultural heritage whilst introducing contemporary luxury to unending AlUla desert landscape. Axel Jarosch, Vice President of Hotels & Resorts at RCU, said: “The Chedi Hegra will stand as a model for authentic luxury, blending modern hospitality with the timeless heritage of AlUla. This project embodies the vision of our Journey Through Time masterplan, which celebrates AlUla’s history and culture, offering travellers an unforgettable experience in one of the world’s most awe-inspiring locations. It also reflects our dedication to sustainable growth, and we are confident this project will set a new benchmark for luxury experiences in AlUla.”
Authentic Cultural Immersion
From the moment guests arrive, they will be immersed in AlUla's unique character.
Welcome drinks inspired by local traditions and a dedicated Saudi Coffee House offer opportunities to learn about the region's culture and history, while in-room welcome extends to an assortment of local dates, nuts, and fruits.
Curated guides provided to guests highlight the key attractions of the UNESCO Heritage Site location. The hotel's dedicated team of experts can provide insights into the region's past and present, ensuring a truly unforgettable experience.
Beyond the hotel, guests can explore wildlife reserves, witness falconry displays, or embark on Bedouin expeditions, all designed to foster a deeper appreciation for AlUla's rich heritage. Guests can choose to explore the ancient ruins, embark on guided tours, or simply relax and enjoy the tranquil desert landscape.
Dining at The Chedi Hegra
The Chedi Hegra offers guests a variety of culinary experiences, each with its own unique character.
With three distinct culinary experiences, guests will have a selection of cuisines to choose from.
The first, Prima Classe, is a fine-dining restaurant housed in the historic Hegra railway station. A unique venue, this restaurant features a heritage exhibition, showcasing a stunning 1906 locomotive as its centrepiece. The train maintenance area has been preserved and is visible through a glass floor, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past, giving dinners a glimpse into the rich history of the UNESCO recognised destination.
For a more casual dining experience, guests can choose The Fort Restaurant, found within the walls of the historic Hegra Fort, here guests are treated to stunning views of the expansive desert landscape. Lastly, The Water Basin Restaurant, named for its sunken seating area overlooking Hegra's breathtaking scenery, is perfect for a leisurely meal.
Mahmoud Sakr, General Manager at The Chedi Hegra. “Our vision is to create a retreat where visitors can explore the wonders of Hegra, indulge in the finest hospitality, and connect with the soul of this extraordinary region.”
Embracing Wellness
Once again ensuring an immersive and authentic experience, the site's original earthen, mud-brick buildings have been preserved and transformed into the hotel's indulgent spa and gym facilities.
With six treatment rooms and two post-treatment relaxation rooms, the Chedi Spa offers an extensive and luxurious spa menu. In addition to the main swimming pool, the Chedi Spa also has a hydrotherapy pool for guests to unwind. Whilst those seeking a more active experience can embrace the well-equipped gym facilities.
