Understanding the MICHELIN Key Categories

MICHELIN Keys 2025

The MICHELIN Key system offers a new way to distinguish hotel excellence, with awards granted based on five universal criteria that extend beyond basic amenities. As of early 2025, over 1,500 hotels have already received MICHELIN Keys, with Inspectors finalising their top global picks for this official worldwide unveiling.

With the arrival of the MICHELIN Keys, travellers now have a trusted guide to help navigate the vast world of luxury hospitality, one that rewards distinctiveness, authenticity, and unforgettable experiences.

Each level of Key reflects a distinct level of character, service, design, and emotional resonance. There are three different MICHELIN Key Levels, and these are the distinguishing features and expectations that MICHELIN inspectors are looking for:

One Key

A very special stay

Hotels receiving One MICHELN Key are true gems with standout character or creativity, often breaking the mold or excelling within its category. Service at these properties consistently exceeds expectations.

Two Keys

An exceptional stay

Hotels receiving Two MICHELIN Keys have remarkable personality and charm with distinctive design or a strong sense of place. Operated with pride and thoughtful attention to detail.

Three Keys

An extraordinary stay

Three MICHELIN Key properties will offer guests unrivalled luxury, elegance, and comfort. A once-in-a-lifetime destination that sets the global standard for unforgettable hospitality.

Additional Awards to be Unveiled

To go beyond conventional recognition, the MICHELIN Guide will introduce four new Special Awards, each celebrating excellence in focused areas of hospitality. Nominee shortlists (five properties per award) will be announced in the run-up to the ceremony, with dates starting from August 13, 2025. These will be presented to one outstanding hotel per category during the Paris ceremony:

  • Architecture & Design Award – Honouring visionary hotels where design elevates the experience
  • Wellness Award – Acknowledges holistic wellness programs that nurture body and soul
  • Local Gateway Award – Celebrates properties that forge deep, immersive connections with their surroundings
  • Opening of the Year Award – Recognises new hotels making a significant impact in their debut year
