All Aboard! Orient Express opens first (stationary) hotel in Italy

The Eternal City is set to shimmer with a renewed brilliance with the imminent arrival of the new Orient Express hotel, La Minerva next month.

A recently revamped, historic 17th-century palace is set to come alive one again as Orient Express La Minerva is set to open its doors to the public in May 2025. Just minutes away from the famous sites of the historic city, sites such as the oculus of Pantheon, and the magic of the Trevi Fountain are just steps away, and this new addition to the Orient Express' collection of luxury hotels is an exciting one.

Coming after the recent launch of the La Dolce Vita Orient Express train, this debut into stationary hospitality precedes another significant hotel opening planned with Arsenale Group for later this year: the Orient Express Palazzo Donà Giovannelli hotel in Venice.

A Roman Renaissance

La Minerva Orient Express Hotel Rome Italy

Beckoning discerning travellers with a promise of unparalleled luxury and a captivating journey through time, La Minerva will stand as a testament to Rome's rich history. The building, originally constructed in 1620, captures the storied tales of illustrious globetrotters and Italian nobility in its foundations, from centuries before.

And now, after a meticulous restoration project has breathed new life into the palace, the hotel seamlessly blends the classical charm of its location and its walls with all the indulgent appointments of the Orient Express, and the modern, sophisticated design sensibilities of award-winning architect and interior designer.

Renowned Mexican-French interior designer and architect Hugo Toro has been entrusted with the exciting task of reimagining the original palace which is set to become the Orient Express La Minerva. Drawing inspiration from the Rome's vibrant spirit and the building's own storied past, Toro will infuse the legendary palace with a contemporary elegance, seamlessly blending classic Art Deco with the refined savoir-faire of Orient Express. This collaboration promises to elevate La Minerva above competitors, new heights of sophistication.

This masterful reinterpretation honours the hotel's soul whilst infusing it with the refined elegance synonymous with Orient Express.

Your Roman Retreat Awaits

Although this particular Orient Express destination is stationary, this does not mean it is unmoving; as soon as guests step inside La Minerva, it is hoped they will be transported to a world of unparalleled elegance steeped in rich, local history.

Roman columns and museum-worthy statues by Rinaldo Rinaldi create a stunning ambiance and provide a striking backdrop, inviting guests to indulge in the local culture and history of Rome. Each of the 93 meticulously designed rooms and 36 suites has been designed to be a personal haven for guests, offering a unique perspective of the city's architectural wonders. Unlike modern, purpose built hotels, at La Minerva, each room has an entirely unique in layout and differs in size; some boast private balconies, whilst others have extravagant bathrooms, but each room and suite allows guests to capture the essence of Rome from the comfort of their space.

The curated wellness area, inspired by Ottoman bath rituals, promises a tranquil escape for the mind and body.

Although Rome arguably offers some of the most delicious dining options on the planet, guests can anticipate an indulgent culinary experience, slated to be as captivating as the hotel's surroundings.

Guests can indulge their palate without leaving the sophisticated confines of La Minerva Hotel, as here a trio of distinct culinary destinations will be available. Within the lobby - promising to be a vibrant social hub - beneath an airy glass atrium and framed by large, original marble columns, the elegant La Minerva Bar provides a refined setting, watched over by the hotel's namesake marble statue. Throughout the day, guests can enjoy a delightful breakfast, a leisurely lunch, or a decadent dinner. And afternoon tea will be the pinnacle of a quintessential luxury dining, and promises to be a delightful ritual for guests to indulge in.

But the hotel's pinnacle of gastronomic indulgence (and best view) lies at the rooftop restaurant and bar named Gigi Roma. The rooftop dining destination will offer guests breathtaking and panoramic views over the Italian capital city. From here guests will not only be invited to dine on the most exclusive, seasonal menu, but also to see ancients sites such as the Piazza della Minerva, St. Peter’s Dome, the Pantheon and the Altare della Patria - from above.

Interestingly for visitors coming from the Gulf, the vibrant Riviera-inspired rooftop bar and restaurant has been brought to life through a collaboration with Rikas Hospitality Group in addition to the chic Paris Society brand. And later this year, the collaboration is also slated to introduce Dubai favourite Mimi Kakushi to the Roman haven, promising diners an evocative journey of internationally renowned Japanese fare.

A Journey Beyond Luxury

La Minerva's offerings transcend the realm of mere luxury. The hotel embraces the spirit and indulgence of the Orient Express, offering guests a voyage of discovery. Standing as a symbol of Rome's deep history, it is expected that Orient Express La Minerva will attract the most discerning and sophisticated visitors, offering unmatched luxury combined with an immersive connection to the rich history of Italy.

Gilda Perez-Alvarado, CEO Orient Express, states: “Opening the doors of Orient Express La Minerva marks a powerful moment in our journey. A city of layered beauty and bold character, Rome offers the perfect canvas to reimagine the legacy of Orient Express through new purpose and experience - where Romans gather, and international aesthetes unite. This exquisite new addition to the Orient Express legacy is more than just a hotel; it's a portal to a bygone era, a stage for unforgettable moments, and a promise of a truly immersive Roman experience.
