Hotel Review: Hôtel Royal - Evian Resort, France

For anyone living in the Middle East, the allure of spending the summer or even winter months in Europe is undeniable.

Maybe it's the crisp, fresh air, the cooler climate (even during the summer months), the rich flavours of local cuisine, or simply the change of pace that comes with cobblestone streets and community café culture. It’s not just about escaping the heat; it’s about stepping into a rhythm of life that feels slower and softer.

Whether it's a morning stroll through a quiet village or a snowy evening in a bustling city square, Europe offers a kind of sensory reset that lingers long after the trip ends and Évian-les-Bains offers just that.

The Location

An hour and a half drive from Geneva International Airport, Hôtel Royal – Evian Resort is a five-star French palace perched above the tranquil shores of Lac Léman in Évian-les-Bains, France. While you'll likely land into Switzerland for ease of access, your destination is unmistakably French, Évian-les-Bains lies just across the (soft) border, making Geneva the most convenient gateway to this refined lakeside retreat.

The charming French town rests along the edge of a vast alpine lake — 72 kilometres long and 13 kilometres wide — referred to as Lac Léman in France and Lake Geneva in Switzerland, depending on which side of the border you’re standing.

Surrounded by the natural beauty of the French Alps, within 47 acres of pristine parkland, Évian-les-Bains offers easy access to several well-known ski destinations such as Bernex and Hirmentaz. Across the expanse of Lac Léman, the Swiss city of Lausanne comes into view, and a frequent ferry service (running up to 14 times daily) makes cross-border exploration both effortless and scenic.

The Background

Hôtel Royal – Evian Resort is steeped in history and elegance, its legacy intertwined with the famed evian® natural mineral water spring and the enduring appeal of thermal spa culture. Since the early 20th century, the petite city of Évian-les-Bains has drawn wellness-minded travellers to its pristine lakeside setting for centuries, and Hôtel Royal has stood as landmark in local hospitality, offering visitors a sanctuary of well-being and refined hospitality.

Inaugurated in 1909 in honour of King Edward VII of England, the hotel quickly became a magnet for royalty, artists, and global icons. Over the decades, it has hosted a roster of extraordinary guests, from the Queen Mother of England and Greta Garbo to Ray Charles, Phil Collins, and Hugh Grant, as well as numerous heads of state, ambassadors, and European and Middle Eastern royalty.

A major restoration in 2015, led by architect François Chatillon and interior designer François Champsaur, returned the property to its original grandeur while introducing contemporary flair. The building's historic and beautiful frescoes by Gustave Louis Jaulmes and Adrien Karbowsky were meticulously preserved, while modern art and bespoke furnishings were added to enhance the interiors.

Today, Hôtel Royal – Evian Resort stands as a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, offering 150 rooms and suites, a Michelin-awarded restaurant (Les Fresques), and the renowned evian® SPA. Beyond leisure, Hôtel Royal has played host to a number of high-profile events, serving as the venue for the G8 Summit in 2003, further affirming its place among the world’s most distinguished luxury hotels.

The Guests & Ambiance

From the winding green avenue, whether you arrive by day or night, the Hôtel Royal – Evian Resort carries a quiet, effortless charm. And when you step inside, this feeling confirmed.

The moment guests arrive, they’re enveloped in an atmosphere that feels both grand and intimate. Despite its palace status, the Hôtel Royal maintains an atmosphere that is welcoming and filled with character. The Hôtel Royal – Evian Resort attracts a diverse and discerning clientele, from families to low-key celebrities, and wellness enthusiasts, united by a shared appreciation for luxury, wellness, and natural beauty.

The Rooms & Suites

The rooms and suites at Hôtel Royal – Evian Resort masterfully blend Belle Époque charm with contemporary amenities. While every space is thoughtfully curated to maximise natural light and features refined materials, including stunning marble-clad bathrooms complete with double sinks, the signature suites stand out. These spacious havens offer unique and generous layouts that include a bay window and private balcony. For the fortunate, these suites boast breathtaking, and panoramic views over Lac Léman and the surrounding parkland which make for a picture perfect sunrise.

With just 150 rooms and suite, each accommodation embraces Art Deco design features coupled with modern accents and amenities. The historic charm is undeniable, but with this in mind, guests should be take into account that the rooms and suites may offer fewer accessible power outlets than contemporary hotel rooms.

Unusually shaped, and laid out

Across all categories, the emphasis is on spaciousness, tranquility, and a seamless connection to the old-world European charm of the history building, and the natural beauty that surrounds the resort.

The Dining

Whether you've decided to order breakfast to the room, or book a table at the Michelin-starred Les Fresques, dining at Hôtel Royal – Evian Resort is a refined experience enjoyed in elegant settings, with menus that celebrate both local produce and global flavours. With three distinct dining options, each venue reflects the resort’s commitment to excellence.

Les Fresques is the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, helmed by Chef Patrice Vander. Here guests will dine beneath frescoed ceilings painted by Gustave Jaulmes, whilst they are introduced to a menu that pivots on seasonal ingredients, and brilliantly artistic presentation. The menu at Les Fresques is crafted with precision and sustainability in mind, and it is this environmentally conscious approach that has earned the restaurant multiple Ecotable certifications.

A more relaxed yet equally refined option, La Véranda, serves sun-filled, globally inspired cuisine throughout the day. With views over Lake Geneva and a ceiling fresco by Marco Del Re, the atmosphere here is casual but infused with old-world European elegant. Guests can enjoy à la carte meals, a snack menu in the afternoon, and a celebrated Sunday “Epicurean” brunch, featuring live cooking stations and seasonal classics.

Le Baccara offers a subdued and sophisticated setting for fine dining, as Chef Franck Miglierini presents a menu of elegant dishes using high-quality ingredients, ideal for guests seeking a more intimate culinary experience.

My top tip? Don't skip room service. I'd recommend ordering breakfast to the room, and indulge in the views over the grounds and the lake to start your day off on the right note. I rarely recommend dining in a hotel room, but in this case I would recommend ordering breakfast to your room at least once during your stay. The views from the rooms at Hôtel Royal – Evian Resort are truly exquisite, especially should you be lake facing. As the sun rises, take the time to indulge in the views, and the slowness of the morning as you enjoy delicious and freshly made pastries in the comfort of a fluffy bathrobe.

Wellness & Spa

Aside from the incredible views, dining options and elevated hospitality, the evian®SPA is just another reason why Hôtel Royal – Evian Resort has become a stalwart destination in the foothills of the Alps. And this spa experience is unlike any other.

With both indoor and outdoor facilities, the evian®SPA is sanctuary of holistic wellness, inspired by the natural journey of evian® mineral water through the French Alps. Spanning an impressive 1700 square meters, the spa offers a deeply immersive experience that mirrors the water’s 15-year transformation from alpine snowfall to pure spring. This concept is woven into every treatment, creating a wellness philosophy rooted in purity, vitality, and renewal.

Guests can choose from a curated menu of à la carte treatments, each designed to relax the body and rejuvenate the mind. The spa is divided into four thematic dimensions: Celestial, Mineral, Precious, and Vital, each dynamically representing a phase in the water’s life cycle and offering unique therapeutic benefits.

Facilities include a hydro-contact pool, sauna, hammam facilities, a very well equipped fitness centre that is open 24 hours a day, and an outdoor infinity pool with views over the lake. Whether guests are indulging in a detoxifying body ritual, a youth-preserving facial, or simply unwinding in the serene relaxation areas, the evian®SPA delivers a wellness experience that is both luxurious and deeply connected, guests will enjoy an unmatched holistic experience.

Hôtel Royal – Evian Resort features two main swimming pools: one indoor and one outdoor. Both are heated and reserved exclusively for hotel guests. The indoor pool is part of the evian®SPA and is open daily from 7am to 11pm, with designated quiet hours for adults. But it is the outdoor pool that is begging for a visit. Emblazoned with the evian® logo, the pool offers some of the most breathtaking scenic views over the lake, and is the perfect place to perch, with or without a book.

The Service & Staff

At Hôtel Royal, you will discover European service at its finest, where hospitality is treated as a dedicated craft rather than a temporary summer job. It is this deep commitment and dedication to service truly shines through in every interaction. The staff is extremely well-trained, attentive without ever being intrusive, and wholly dedicated to elevating your stay. This exceptional level of service invites every guest to fully unwind, relinquish their worries, and simply enjoy the moment.

Hôtel Royal – Evian Resort provides a curated selection of activities that invites every guest, from the avid athlete to the youngest, to engage with the stunning Alpine environment. For those seeking adventure, a specialised department provides a bespoke program of excursions, from mountain hiking and rafting to paragliding and cultural tours.

At the heart of this offering is an extraordinary commitment to sport, led by the Evian Resort Golf Club. Guests enjoy exclusive access to The Champions Course, the legendary 18-hole course that hosts The Amundi Evian Championship, the only women's Major in continental Europe. Complementing this is the Evian Resort Golf Club Academy with The Lake Course, designed for rapid improvement.

During my stay, I took advantage of the fresh air and the cooler temperatures, and took a morning hike. Don't worry this adventure can be catered to your fitness levels and the length of time you'd like to be out in the wild. But I can't recommend this enough, the beauty of the mountains and the never-ending views are something to be hold and remember forever.

Evian Lake Double Rainbow

For those seeking incredible views with a side of luxury, you simply must book a trip on the private motoryacht. Arranged by the hotel, this is an ultra-luxe experience, with the ability to take a family or a relatively large group out on the lake, this is the ideal way to get your bearings and discover more incredible views of both Evian and the Swiss side of the lake. Complete with snacks, drinks and a friendly captain, this is a memorable experience that everyone will enjoy.

Finally, for parents seeking a small escape or a moment of unworried indulgence in the spa, the supervised kid's club offers dedicated entertainment, montessori and care under fully qualified staff for children between the ages of 4 months to 17 years.

Sustainability

Embracing sustainability and energy saving concepts in various forms, Hôtel Royal – Evian Resort may be an institution, but it is a future facing insitution.

With regards to energy, Hôtel Royal is connected to a wood-fired district heating system to significantly reduce the hotel's use of natural gas and fossil fuels, particularly in the winter months. The resort promotes soft mobility by offering a complimentary shuttle service using electric vehicles to and from the town, and e-bikes are also available for guests to use. The resort has gone a step further by installing charging stations for guests' electric vehicles.

The 47-acre hotel grounds are designated as an official LPO (League for the Protection of Birds) sanctuary. This means hunting and fishing are prohibited, and efforts are made to protect and promote local biodiversity. And the resort has converted a significant area of its grounds into permanent meadows to safeguard resources and boost biodiversity.

Guests will also find a selection of fresh produce such as vegetables, meats and cheese that are used in the resort's restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Les Fresques, have been sourced or farmed locally. The kitchen and gardening team maintains a large, completely natural and pesticide-free 3,000 m² kitchen garden using permaculture techniques, ensuring that the hotel and its restaurants are, to an extent, self-sufficient.

How would you describe it to a friend?

In Évian-les-Bains, a city famous for its link to Evian water, the Hôtel Royal offers the kind of true, old-world European luxury that’s refreshingly free of stiffness. This stunning Belle Époque palace, with exceptional views over Lac Léman (Lake Geneva), is the perfect choice for combining classic French charm with modern comforts and easy access to both the Alps and Switzerland.
