Nike first introduced the made-for-athletes hijab for public purchase in 2017.

It was following Sarah Attar's historic appearance for Saudi Arabia at the 2012 Olympics, Nike recognised the need for modest performance-wear and set out upon a five year journey of designing developing and testing.

The Nike Pro Hijab is made using a single layer of opaque, tight-fitting, stretch material, this hijab was designed for high-performance and sports of any kind. This design created an opportunity for women around the world to maintain their modest values, and participate in exercise and sports in comfort.

And, it was a Saudi Arabian athlete who set this now award-winning, design in motion.

Upon the launch of the product in 2017, Nike said, "By providing Muslim athletes with the most groundbreaking products, like the Nike Pro Hijab, Nike aims to serve today’s pioneers as well as inspire even more women and girls in the region who still face barriers and limited access to sport."

This piece of modest-wear won the award for General Excellence in Fast Company's 2017 Innovation By Design Awards. The award's objective is to honour the most groundbreaking designs globally, irrespective of the industry or sector they belong to.

Since then, the sportswear and streetwear company has worked closely with the Muslim and modest communities to ensure they are represented and catered to.

And just this week, British-Bengali-Muslim fashion designer Saeedah Haque announced her collaboration with Nike to develop a range of modest streetwear that will include a selection of Nike branded hijabs and niqabs.

Nike London shared a post to their official Instagram that a capsule collection designed by Haque would be released.

The release comes after Haque designed her own range using Nike materials, and her fans and followers on both TikTok and Instagram brought it to the attention of Nike, and it was through social media that the range and partnership was born.

The collection of modest-wear including Nike branded abayas, niqabs and hijabs that will be available in a range they have named 'Nike by You', stating that North London designer Haque "is bringing fresh utility energy to modest fashion".

Haque is determined to combine modern, aesthetic streetwear with traditional modest-wear, making cool and wearable design whilst maintaining traditional values.

Set to be available to shop in store at Nike Town London from August 11, the limited collection will unfortunately not be available to shop online according to Haque. However, we hope that this limited collection finds a more permanent home in the Nike range with international availability.
