September 23, a day when patriotism knows no bounds, the air is electric with our shared heritage, and a tapestry of traditions weaves a sense of unity.

The depth of belonging we feel on Saudi National Day is profound, with annual celebrations cementing our identity – even across oceans and continents.

This year, we sat down with two Saudis living abroad, to reflect on what it means to be from this Kingdom, how the spirit of being Saudi defies physical distances, how they recreate National Day festivities, and to hear their inspiring away-from-home stories.

Mentor, Business Coach, and Brand Strategist

Dedicated to empowering women, Leena Alsulaiman has taken on the role of guiding them through various aspects of their lives. Seeing how the women she works with transform and grow brings her immense joy and a deep sense of accomplishment. “Some think of me as a personal architect, helping women build the relationship they know they are meant to experience with themselves.”

The Journey

Moving to the US in 2016 with her three children, Leena aimed to broaden their horizons and provide them with new opportunities, including education and personal growth. “I also saw it as a chance to expand my professional endeavours and connect with a diverse community.”

Currently a California resident, she embraces a distinct perspective that deepens her understanding of Saudi culture and values, allowing her to reflect on traditions and beliefs, while also recognising the beauty behind other cultures.

“Living abroad has enhanced my pride and admiration for my Saudi roots, motivating me to share our culture's richness and warmth with those around me.”

Longing for Home

“While I appreciate my Californian lifestyle, I deeply miss some aspects of my homeland. The genuine sense of unity and kinship ingrained in Saudi culture is something I yearn for,” she says.

Being surrounded by loved ones, savouring Saudi dates and coffee during Ramadan, or being part of family gatherings evoke a feeling of warmth and nostalgia that connects Leena’s heart to the Kingdom.

She preserves her family’s culinary heritage by teaching her children preparation techniques, while using The Art of Saudi Cooking by Zobaida Mousily, Safiya Suleiman, and Samia Al Harkan, passed down by her mother.

“I strive to keep the essence of our culture alive and maintain a strong connection with my roots,” Leena explains.

She also stays connected through frequent travels back home, nurturing relationships with family and friends, collaborating with Saudi clients, participating in cultural events, and leveraging online platforms.

Challenging Misconceptions

Leena has faced her fair share of stereotypes, including generalisations and oversimplified views about women's rights and cultural practices.

However, when they arise, Leena never hesitates to turn them into opportunities to inform and enlighten others about the rich diversity of Saudi society. She also makes sure to highlight the significant strides made in recent years, particularly the remarkable accomplishments by Saudi women in various fields.

“Engaging in open dialogue, sharing personal narratives, and discussing matters can significantly contribute to dispelling such stereotypes, promoting a better understanding of our culture and people.”

The Pride of Being Saudi

One of Leena’s most treasured keepsakes is a beautiful necklace that once belonged to her grandmother. As the first grandchild in the family, this cherished item (that she always carries with her) serves as a reminder of her roots, her cultural legacy, and the influential women who played pivotal roles in shaping who she is today. It also embodies the core values and traditions ingrained in her through her Saudi upbringing.

Witnessing the remarkable progress that the Kingdom has made, particularly in advancing the status of women, fills Leena with deep pride. As she observes her fellow Saudis making noteworthy global contributions in various fields, she is reminded of the boundless potential and talent that define the nation's identity.

Celebrating Away from Home

To celebrate Saudi National Day, Leena gathers with family and friends, decorates her home with national symbols and colours, prepares traditional dishes, and joins events organised by the Saudi community to honour the country’s heritage and identity.

The festivities might be on a smaller scale, but “our spirit and enthusiasm remain strong, as we stay true to our traditions, maintain our connection to our roots, and share our culture with those around us, even when far from home.”

Lessons Learned

For Saudis contemplating living overseas, Leena recommends “approaching the move with an open-minded attitude, ready to accept and engage in unfamiliar experiences.”

As a life, brand, and mindset mentor, she understands the importance of adaptability, resilience, and seizing new opportunities. She also recognises the power of connecting with others from diverse backgrounds, and embracing a sense of community – regardless of geographical barriers.

While nurturing your personal growth, it is essential to wear your national identity with pride and integrity, Leena explains. “Embrace the chance to positively impact your new surroundings while remaining tethered to your Saudi identity.”
