While the allure of London, Paris, and Barcelona continuing to captivate as perennial favourites for European city getaways, there is a hidden trove of offbeat destinations that are most definitely worthy of exploration.

In this piece, we look at four offbeat European destinations that should be on your list of places to visit.

Athens, Greece

Often, Athens is overlooked as a European destination in favour of the much-loved Greek isles dotted along the coast, however there is nowhere quite like Athens if you want to immerse yourself in history. Every year, intrepid visitors travel to the Greek capital to hike up the Acropolis, browse the myriad museums, and seek out tans at nearby beaches. They also come for Greek food, which builds many meals from three vital ingredients: olive oil, wheat, and grapes. Add in fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, and meat, and a philhellene could want nothing more.

Must do: To enjoy a fabulous view of the city and the Acropolis, hike up to the peak of Lycabettus Hill. At 277-metres it’s the highest point in Athens.

Porto, Portugal

Avoid the Lisbon crowds, and head to the second largest city in Portugal: Porto.

Porto is located on the Douro River and is known for its ‘azulejos’ – the famous ceramic blue tiles, which adorn its churches. The historic centre, a UNESCO world heritage site, is defined by charming cobblestone streets, colourful buildings and beautiful architecture, which date back to the Middle Ages. A city that is made for exploring on foot, you’ll navigate maze-like neighbourhoods, stopping off at traditional restaurants serving specialities such as francesinha – a hearty sandwich layered with beefsteak and topped with a fried egg and cheese.

Must do: Walk along the Ribeira riverside promenade at sunset and cross the Dom Luis I Bridge for one of Porto’s best views.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Danes rank among the happiest people in the world and when you visit the capital it’s easy to see why. Modern architecture, royal history and a buzzing culinary scene with 15 Michelin-starred restaurants, plus a focus on sustainability make this one of the coolest and most interesting places to visit any time of year. Although you might immediately think of Copenhagen as being cold, the city gets warm summer temperatures, making it a great destination for summer or winter.

Must do: Take a trip to Tivoli Gardens, the second oldest operating amusement park in the world. Visit at night for fairytale-like feels with thousands of twinkling lights and illuminations.

Tbilisi, Georgia

Georgia’s capital has been attracting visitors for centuries but it still has all the charm of a hidden gem. Nestled in a valley between the north and south Caucasus mountain ranges and sitting on the banks of the river Mtkvari, Tbilisi boasts a picturesque Old Town with beautiful churches, cafes and restaurants, and a maze of streets to explore. Soak in the hot springs in the heart of the city to experience a typically Georgian tradition.

Must do: Visit Narikala Fortress and take a walk along the 1500-metre trail that runs from the top of the ridge near the Mother Georgia statue around the fortress and down into Old Town to near the entrance of the Botanical Gardens.
