Hidden Gem: Beit Kull Cafe is where old-school charm meets uptown Riyadh

In the heart of Riyadh’s glitzy Al Olaya district, where glass towers flirt with the desert sun and international brands jostle for attention, it seems surprising to stumble upon a cafe that feels like it’s been lifted straight out of 1950s Cairo. And yet, tucked in a quiet side street just south of the iconic Al Faisaliah Centre, Beit Kull Cafe offers exactly that: an unexpectedly nostalgic escape, with all the charm of a vintage neighbourhood haunt and the polish of a boutique hotel lobby.

The Art of Detail

Beit Kull Riyadh Hidden Gem 3

Walk through the doors of Beit Kull and you’re immediately transported – not figuratively, but emotionally, atmospherically – to a different place and time. The tiles are old-world, the chairs and tables consciously retro, and the chandeliers are from a time when electricity was a luxury and elegance was non-negotiable.

“We brought everything in from Cairo,” says Moheb, the cafe’s manager, with an unmistakable glint of pride. “Every piece. We wanted our guests to feel something real.”

That commitment to ambience is especially evident at night. With its antique lighting fixtures that give out a soft golden glow, the space feels warm, inviting, and just theatrical enough. But don’t discount a daytime visit – large side windows frame a dreamy view of Al Faisaliah, while a partially transparent ceiling lets natural light filter in, casting soft shadows over vintage porcelain and patterned floors.

Beyond the main lounge, easily the star of the show, are two more seating areas: one is outdoors (perfect for Riyadh’s fleeting winter) and another with a sleeker, more contemporary design. But make no mistake, it’s the classic salon with its throwback vibes that makes this cafe feel like a secret.

Soundtrack of the Past

At Beit Kull, even the music tells a story. Umm Kulthum, Abdel Halim Hafez, George Wassouf, and a touch of early-career Assala – this isn’t background noise, it’s memory-making. Add the gentle hum of conversation and the faint scent of double apple shisha, and you’ve got a mood that’s hard to fake and even harder to forget.

A Limited Menu (In the Best Way!)

The drink selection is generous: think handcrafted coffee (hot and iced), fruit smoothies, tangy mojitos in a spectrum of flavours, and freshly pressed juices. When it comes to food, simplicity reigns. The star? Manakish, straight out of the oven. Alongside them, you’ll find just two types of salad, and one of them isn’t even on the menu. It’s the kind of confident minimalism that feels oddly refreshing in an era of overcomplicated cafe concepts.

Hospitality Done Right

With space for up to 100 guests, Beit Kull isn’t cramped, but it’s wise to reserve ahead, especially on weekends when Riyadh’s cafe crowd comes out to play. Service is polished and impressively quick, a rarity in venues with this much character. Parking is generally easy after office hours, though you might have to be patient during the day.

Want to skip the hassle? Hop on the metro. The Faisaliah Centre station on the blue line is just a five-minute walk away.
