From bold installations to game-changing conversations, “At the Edge” sets a new tone for Saudi Arabia’s creative scene.
Riyadh is buzzing with energy as Art Week Riyadh takes over the JAX District from April 6 to 13 — and it’s not just another art event. Curated under the theme “At the Edge,” this week-long showcase is positioning itself as a cultural landmark in Saudi Arabia’s rapidly evolving art world.
Organised by the Visual Arts Commission, the event is a gathering point for local and international artists, curators, thinkers, and institutions. It’s a space where contemporary ideas meet cultural heritage, where boundaries blur between tradition and experimentation.
So why “At the Edge”?“It reflects where Riyadh is right now,” said Vittoria Matarrese, Director and Art Curator of Art Week. “A city caught between the desert and urban sprawl, the past and the future.” That tension, she says, is fuelling a wave of creativity — and it’s on full display at the biennale-style exhibition.
But Art Week isn’t just about what’s hanging on the walls. It’s also about the conversations. Curator Shumon Basar is behind the Public Cultural Program, titled “How to Create an Art World: Lessons in Value.” His focus? The deeper questions. “We’re exploring how art generates value—economically, symbolically, socially—and how it can help us understand transformation, not just mirror it.”
Art Week Riyadh isn’t playing it safe. It’s a bold, reflective, and highly engaged cultural moment — one that seems determined to push the boundaries of what art means in the region, and who gets to shape it.
