In a landmark move that reflects Saudi Arabia’s accelerating cultural transformation, the Saudi Film Commission has announced the opening of submissions for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2025 Oscars, this event will be the 98th edition of Academy Awards.
This government backed, creative initiative is part of the Kingdom’s broader push to elevate homegrown talent and showcase Saudi storytelling to a global audience.

To qualify for the International Feature Film category, entries must adhere to the official guidelines set by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Eligible films must run over 40 minutes, feature primarily non-English dialogue (exceeding 50%), but also include include clear, accurate English subtitles.
Additionally, the film must have its initial theatrical release in Saudi Arabia between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025. Saudi Film is going global
This announcement builds on the momentum of Saudi Arabia’s cinematic rise since lifting its cinema ban in 2018.
Since the lifting of the ban, the Kingdom has pushed forward to become the go-to destination for film-making in the region. Award-winning Saudi films such as Norah and Mandoob have been showcased at film festivals around the world including the Toronto International Film Festival and at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. These films, in addition to Wadjda — the Kingdom’s first-ever Oscar submission in 2012 — have paved the way for a new generation of storytellers. Today, with local film initiatives like NEOM, the Red Sea Film Festival, in addition to Vision 2030’s cultural diversification goals, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a serious contender in the global film industry.
For filmmakers ready to take the leap, this opportunity to submit to the 98th edition of Academy Awards offers the opportunity to win big, but this is more than an award — it’s an opportunity to share Saudi narratives with the world.
