The museum is housed within the well-preserved and restored Bab Al-Bunt building in Al Balad. This building once served as Jeddah’s original gateway to the world, a regional landmark for travellers and trade. Following a meticulous restoration process, adhering to the highest environmental sustainability standards for heritage conservation, Bab Al-Bunt retains its ancient architectural character, now revived as a cultural beacon that links past and present, reinforcing Historic Jeddah’s identity as a bridge between cultures along the Red Sea coast.

Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan Al Saud, Minister of Culture and Chairman of the Museums Commission, affirmed that the Red Sea Museum "embodies the Kingdom’s commitment to protecting and preserving national heritage in line with Vision 2030, while building a cultural infrastructure that enhances quality of life through arts, culture and education, and empowers creators."

An Immersive Cultural Experience

Designed as an immersive cultural experience, the soon-to-open Red Sea Museum will combine contemporary technologies with rigorous research and artefact preservation practices. Its vision is to foster cross-cultural exchange of knowledge, celebrating the diversity of the Red Sea region and the enduring legacy of its people.

The permanent exhibitions feature an extensive collection of over 1,000 historical and artistic pieces displayed across seven thematic sections, in 23 galleries. These exhibitions use a contemporary approach, blending historical narrative with interactive experiences to explore the relationship between people and the Red Sea.

Key thematic sections include:

  • Al Bunt: Mapping the history and transformation of the Bab Al-Bunt building itself.
  • Sea of Abundance: Charting the region’s maritime trade, cartography, and cultural exchange.
  • Sea of Faith: Tracing historic journeys to sacred cities and iconic artefacts.
  • A Living Sea: Celebrating the region’s biodiversity and coastal communities.

The collection is rich in variety, including rare artefacts such as Chinese ceramics, incense burners, coral pieces, jewelry, navigational instruments, maps, sacred manuscripts, and archival photographs. These historical items are presented alongside modern and contemporary artworks by Saudi, regional, and international artists, creating a visual dialogue that connects the region's past and present.

Debut Exhibition and Public Programming

The museum's opening will also feature its inaugural temporary exhibition, “Gateway of Gateways,” by Saudi artist Moath Alofi and curated by Philippe Cardinal. This exhibition documents the architectural and symbolic evolution of Bab Al-Bunt and its historical role, offering visitors a contemporary visual interpretation of the building’s cultural legacy.

Beyond the galleries, the Red Sea Museum will launch a vibrant public program that includes workshops, masterclasses, training courses, open talks, and seminars. Highlights of the programming include, artisan training through the “Made in the Red Sea” initiative, a collaborative sustainability projects such as “Red Sea Art” and cultural performances, including “Music of the Red Sea,” a unique symphony and parade celebrating the region’s musical traditions that blends authenticity and experimentation.
