The Tuwaiq International Sculpture Symposium has returned to Riyadh for its sixth iteration, showcasing the artistic prowess of 30 sculptors from around the globe.
Open now to the public, the symposium offers visitors a rich program of workshops, educational excursions, in addition to interactive talks and learning opportunities. The creative event runs until February 24, under the theme "From Then to Now: Joy in the Struggle of Making".
Each sculpture created during this period is destined to join the permanent collection of Riyadh Art, ensuring their preservation and public display across the city. This initiative not only beautifies the urban environment but also enriches the local cultural landscape.
The sculptures will take their place alongside significant works like Robert Indiana’s “LOVE (Red Outside Blue Inside)” and Alexander Calder’s “Janey Waney,” both prominently located at the King Abdullah Financial District Metro Station. Additionally, Ugo Rondinone’s “Sun” has found a new home at the King Abdulaziz Historical Center.
Riyadh Art is on a mission to install over 1,000 public artworks, contributing to the city’s ambition to transform into a hub of cultural richness. The Tuwaiq Symposium plays a crucial role in this vision, marking a pivotal moment in Riyadh's cultural development.
The selection of artists this year was highly competitive, with over 750 applicants from 23 countries. Each artist brings a unique perspective that reflects the symposium’s theme, emphasizing the evolution of sculpture as a dynamic form of contemporary art.
The symposium is part of Riyadh Grand Projects, launched by King Salman in 2019, aimed at revitalising the city and cementing its status as a leading cultural destination. Visitors to the event can expect not just to view art but to engage deeply with it through the various programs designed to enhance public understanding and appreciation of modern sculptural practices.
