L’ÉCOLE Middle East and Louvre Abu Dhabi unveil a gemstone odyssey

A captivating exploration of the intersection between gemology and art history, this exhibition will feature eleven iconic pieces from the museum’s permanent collection

L’ÉCOLE Middle East, in collaboration with Louvre Abu Dhabi, is set to unveil a captivating exploration of the intersection between gemology and art history.

L'ÉCOLE Middle East, School of Jewellery Arts, is a cultural institution dedicated to sharing the art and craft of jewellery. It offers a diverse program of courses, workshops, exhibitions, and talks to educate and inspire people of all ages and backgrounds. The school is supported by renowned fine jewellery house, Van Cleef & Arpels, and aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the history, culture, and craftsmanship of jewellery.

The inaugural edition of the “Through the Lens of L’ÉCOLE Middle East” exhibition and learning series will delve into the cultural and historical significance of eleven iconic pieces from the museum’s permanent collection.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone for both institutions, reflecting their shared commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of art, history, and craftsmanship.

In a statement, Sophie Claudel, Director of L’ÉCOLE Middle East, emphasised that this partnership is a pivotal step in bridging the gap between art and jewellery culture, through education and learning, "‘Through the Lens of L’ÉCOLE Middle East’ opens new horizons for audiences to engage with the fascinating world of gemstones and their influence on art and history. Together, we aim for this series platform to bring light to the cultural narratives and craftsmanship embedded in these extraordinary artefacts."

Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the museum’s vision as a universal platform for dialogue and cultural exchange. He praises the collaboration as an opportunity to explore the intricate connections between art, history, and craftsmanship, offering audiences a unique glimpse into the world of gemstones and their profound impact on human civilisation: "The event offers audiences a rare opportunity to delve into the cultural significance of gemstones through the expert insights of distinguished speakers."

A Distinguished Panel of Experts & a Journey Through Time

The talk will feature a distinguished panel of experts, including Jérôme Farigoule, Chief Curator at Louvre Abu Dhabi, and L’ÉCOLE Middle East lecturers Dr. David Usieto Cabrera and Chandra Horn. Together, they will embark on a captivating journey, examining the historical significance, materiality, and cultural context of each piece.

The highlighted artefacts, ranging from ancient to modern, will offer a glimpse into the diverse ways in which gemstones have been used throughout history. From the symbolic power of ancient jewellery to the intricate craftsmanship of medieval reliquaries, each piece tells a unique story.

A brooch in the form of an eagle (San Marino, 2nd–5th Century CE): A testament to the use of gemstones to convey authority and grandeur in early European jewellery.

Reliquary in the form of a stupa (Swat Valley): Adorned with gemstones, this reliquary signifies devotion and protection, highlighting the spiritual role of material objects.

Carnelian necklace from the Indus Valley (3rd millennium BCE): A symbol of early craftsmanship and trade, this necklace demonstrates the ancient significance of carnelian as a mark of status and beauty.

Buddhist painting on silk of a standing bodhisattva (700–1200 CE): Exemplifies the spiritual use of gemstones, with precious stones adorning religious art to symbolise divine enlightenment.

Dagger with a parrot-shaped pommel: A ceremonial weapon showcasing how gemstones elevate functional objects into symbols of prestige and artistry.
