Considered more laid back than the hectic metropolis in the neighbouring Emirate of Dubai, the nation’s capital has its own unique, multifaceted character. If you’re looking for activities to do at night in Abu Dhabi, there are a plethora of excellent options. Whether you’re on a solo trip or looking to dance into the wee hours with friends and family, these are our favourite options for a night full of laughter and fun in Abu Dhabi.
1. Dine out on a Dhow Dinner Cruise
Surrounded by the Arabian Gulf, Abu Dhabi’s picturesque waterfronts are some of its most alluring natural aspects. At night, opt for an elegant Dhow Dinner Cruise. You can experience the craftsmanship of a traditional wooden dhow – a ship with one or two masts largely used in the Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean – and indulge in cuisine from a five-star international menu, while you take in the sights and sounds of Abu Dhabi from the water. Upon arrival, you will be greeted with a red carpet reception, Arabic coffee and dates before embarking on a two-hour, unforgettable cruise. Pick-up is from Marina Mall.
2. Stargazing at Arabian Nights Village
Another scene stealer in Abu Dhabi is, of course, the desert. One of the most soothing experiences is to spend an evening gazing up at the starlit sky amid the sand dunes. Year round, the Arabian Nights Village offers visitors the chance to spend the evening watching the stars and deciphering the constellations. Situated amid the desert dunes and verdant palm oasis just outside the capital, star gazers can sit around a fire pit (not needed during the summer months!) with a traditional Arabian coffee in hand while they relish the wonders of the night sky. You can also visit an Emirati camel farm, try henna painting or take a dip in the Oasis Pool.
3. Kayak through the Mangroves
Another leisurely evening pastime in Abu Dhabi is a kayak through the Emirati’s mesmerizing mangroves. A nighttime paddle, particularly during the summer season when outdoor fun in the daytime isn’t very comfortable, is a wonderful way to get out in nature when it is cooler. A kayak through the mangroves is also a way to escape from the city and immerse oneself in the beautiful surroundings of Jubail Mangrove Park. Be ready to encounter fascinating creatures, as well as spectacular views of the sunset and the starry sky.
4. Get playful as the sun goes down
Whether you’re into golfing, diving or cycling, Abu Dhabi has numerous venues to keep you occupied and in shape. During the hot summer months, it is ideal and even recommended to play sports in the evening in order to avoid the heat of the sun. At Yas Marina, you can cycle along the F1 track and imagine you’re rivalling Lewis Hamilton on your two-wheeled racer.
For those who love the ocean, you can also go for a dive at night at Al Mahara Diving Center and see the sunset over the Arabian Gulf from the water. Divers do need to have the required PADI certifications to participate and the timing usually depends on the weather conditions.
Lastly, there’s also the possibility of playing a round of golf at night at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club in Khalifa City. Golfers can now play a round of nine after the sun sets, with giant floodlights lighting the way for your expert swing. Whether this is an afterwork activity to wind down or just a way to meet up and have fun with friends, golfing at night is a unique experience and a good way to get outside during the hottest months of the year.
5. A walk on the Corniche
Sometimes a relaxing walk in the evening is the perfect way to wind down after a busy day of sightseeing and the picturesque 8km-long corniche overlooking the glistening waters of the Arabian Gulf is a wonderful spot to do it. In recent years, public artworks and food stalls have popped up to enhance the experience, but there are also lots of bars and restaurants dotted along the shore. There are even colourful play areas for kids in various locations next to the waterfront, making this a perfect fun and free activity for families in Abu Dhabi.
