Dammam, the capital of Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, is a bustling port city that’s jam-packed with things to do. It’s part of the greater Dammam area that includes the smaller cities of Dhahran and Khobar, and between these ‘triplets,’ there’s no end of world-class museums, amusement centres, serene nature spots and cultural experiences.

The pace of life here is generally considered to be a little slower than in Saudi’s bigger cities, and you’ll find the relaxed atmosphere most striking in the region’s many beautiful outdoor destinations – breezy corniches, tiny islands, pretty lake parks and pristine beaches. These are our favourite things to do in Dammam.

1. Relax with a picnic at King Fahd Park

The city’s green lung, King Fahd Park is one of the largest parks in Saudi Arabia. Also known as ‘Life Park’, it’s a haven of tree-lined walkways, grassy lawns, lakes, fountains, and shady picnic areas that come complete with barbecue stations.

There are plenty of quiet zones for the grown-ups, but the park is also a big hit with families as there are playgrounds, amusement rides and a popular skate park that’s bound to impress the older kids.

2. Wander around Modon Lake Park

Modon Lake is the largest man-made lake in Saudi Arabia, filled with recycled water and surrounded by palm-dotted lawns. The park sprawls over 400,000 sq-metres and is rarely crowded, making it a tranquil spot for picnics, romantic strolls, visiting the ducks, looking out for turtles or taking a gentle boat ride. It’s well-lit after dark when the lake is illuminated to dramatic effect.

3. Stroll along Dammam Corniche

Dammam Corniche is a terrific place to get your bearings when you first arrive in the city, especially for those who want to experience a slice of everyday Dammam life. The peaceful promenade is a big draw for locals and expats who come to enjoy the scenic Arabian Gulf views, beautifully kept waterfront parks and family-friendly playgrounds.

Evenings and weekends are particularly popular and the stretch is often at its liveliest as the sun goes down and the city unwinds. A good selection of cafes and food stalls in the area means there’s always somewhere to stop for a coffee or snack too.

4. Be wowed at Ithra (The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture)

Ithra should be top of any visitor’s list to the Eastern Province. Named by Time magazine as one of the World’s Greatest Places to Visit, it’s a learning centre that was designed to reflect “the changes sweeping Saudi Arabia.”

The architecture is astonishing, composed of four massive ‘stones’, that house a library, auditorium, Great Hall and a main tower that’s home to high-tech cultural facilities.

5. Soak up the sun at Half Moon Bay

The much-loved Half Moon Bay is a crescent-shaped beach just outside Dammam, known for its calm waters and pristine shoreline. Long stretches of shallows are ideal for paddling with little ones, and there are safe swimming zones too, making the bay a popular family day out.

For adults, there’s a long list of water-based activities on offer here too, including excellent scuba diving, kite surfing, jet skiing and sailing. Cafes and a handful of international resorts dot the coastline, so there are always plenty of decent lunch options close by too.

6. Explore the past at Tarout Castle

Tarout Island is an easy 30-minute drive from downtown Dammam, and it’s here you’ll discover the remains of a fantastically atmospheric ancient fort – Tarout Castle. With origins dating back more than 5,000 years, this is one of the oldest historical places in the region.

The hilltop site is originally thought to have been dedicated to the Mesopotamian goddess Ashtar and was later used by the Portuguese as a military base. Today the castle sits right by the island’s old town and is a great place to explore, take a tour and snap some pictures of the palm-dotted scenery.

7. Step back in time at the Heritage Village

Dammam’s Heritage Village is the go-to spot for anyone looking for a deep dive into Saudi Arabia’s history and culture. This sprawling, five-storey venue gives visitors the chance to explore everything from authentic local cuisine in the on-site restaurant to exhibitions of traditional architecture and ancient artifacts.

Taxidermy to weaponry, jewels, artworks, manuscripts and a collection of vintage cars are also showcased on the centre’s floors, plus there’s even a ‘village studio’ where you can dress up in national costume and take photos as a memento of your trip.

8. Let off steam with the family at Adventure World

A visit to epic play centre Adventure World is the ultimate day out for kids. Laser tag, amusement rides and a daring rope course will help even the most energetic in the family burn off some energy, while the giant soft play area is great fun for little ones.

Don’t miss the video arcade, VR games centre, go-kart arena, bowling alley or massive trampoline park either. Everyone can fuel up when needed with a break at the on-site food court – there are plenty of sit-down meal options or snack stalls for a treat.

This complex, devoted to science and technology is aimed at adult researchers and students, as well as offering fun, interactive exhibits for kids. There are seven halls to explore, plus an IMAX Dome screening educational short films and nature documentaries. Any space enthusiasts in your group will also enjoy the on-site astronomical observatory.

Al Rashid Mall pulls in shoppers from right across the region, as there’s a great mix of international brands and popular Arab stores here. Expect everything from fashion and homewares to electronics and toys, plus a giant Carrefour supermarket.

Most of the outlets are modern brands, but there also a handful of traditional, souq-style stores where you can pick up perfumes, gifts, handicrafts and other souvenirs. Aside from the shopping, there are beauty salons to hit, plenty of cafes, coffee shops and restaurants to relax in, plus a popular children’s play area.
