Camping in Tanomah’s high-altitude haven, Al-Sharaf Park

North of Aseer’s capital city and 2,500 metres above sea level, Tanomah offers one of Saudi Arabia’s most refreshing outdoor experiences.

Clinging to its western slopes is Al-Sharaf Park, wrapped in dense forests and dramatic rocky outcrops. The air stays cool throughout most of the year, even during the peak of summer, and winter nights can turn unexpectedly crisp. This is where you come to tune everything out.

Campers love Al-Sharaf for the quiet and views: thick morning fog rolling through the trees, clear afternoons overlooking valleys, and star-filled skies after dark. The park doubles as a home base for climbers and hikers chasing the rush of sheer rock walls and forest trails that cut deep into the mountains. In fact, the area is home to dozens of climbing routes, ranging from accessible beginner lines to challenging multi-pitch ascents, many developed in the 1990s and expanded through the Saudi Bolting Project.

Nearby, trails lead into forested areas perfumed with seasonal wildflowers and aromatic herbs like basil, mint, and wormwood. These forests are also rich with juniper and wild olive trees. Not far from the park, and still within Tanomah, waterfalls burst to life after rain, and valleys fill with the sound of flowing streams. In summer, visitors can explore local farms and terraced orchards, where grapes, pomegranates, and figs wait to be picked, and local honey, as wild and floral as the landscape itself, is harvested fresh.

Tanomah’s Al-Sharaf Park makes it easy to forget life back home. The atmosphere is welcoming, the scenery is always shifting, and the sense of serenity is like nothing else. There is space here to breathe, think, or do absolutely nothing. And somehow, that feels like the point.
