The sunset views in Dammam, in Saudi’s Eastern Province, are spectacular. Just before dusk, locals and visitors alike make their way to the Corniche – the city’s glorious waterfront promenade – to watch the shimmering colours in the golden hour before the sun begins to set across the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf. Distinctive buildings in the city’s surrounding areas also make for memorable photo opportunities as the sun dips in the sky, with their big, bold exteriors and otherworldly glows. These are the best locations to see it for yourself.
1. King Fahd Park
Also known as Life Park, this huge, well-maintained green space is a popular picnic spot in Dammam – it’s also one of the biggest parks in the Kingdom. For the best sunset views head to the pretty, artificial lake and watch as the orange glow spreads over the calm water, or take an evening stroll past the spectacular fountain and waterfalls. There’s even a skate park, and an amusement park for kids. Bird lovers should take their binoculars – lots of species can be seen here.
2. The Corniche
One of Dammam’s most appealing spots, the Corniche is a seaside promenade that stretches for miles and miles, with stunning views over the waves of the Arabian Gulf – which are particularly magnificent to witness as the sun sets. You might even get lucky and see some dolphins darting elegantly through the water.
Fishing is a popular activity along this stretch and there are lots of opportunities to buy local fish or bring your own picnic. It’s also worth taking a proper stroll and admiring the modern art installations and sculptures that are dotted along parts of the boardwalk. Roller blading and cycling are also popular ways to get around.
3. Half Moon Bay
One of the finest bays in all of Saudi Arabia. Come for the spectacular sunsets, stay for the horse riding, paragliding, bonfires and barbecues. There are also opportunities for lots of watersports and even quad biking on the sand dunes. Note that you can only swim in specific areas. Avoid weekends if possible; crowds are lighter during the week. Sunrise and sunset are effortlessly Instagrammable – no filter required.
4. Marjan Island
Although this is an artificial island, also known as Coral island, it feels like it’s been here forever. The best place to catch the glorious sun as it sets is by the distinctive circular tower, which is also atmospherically lit at night – even better, climb the tower at sunset or sunrise for extraordinary panoramic views of Dammam’s Corniche.
A bridge connects the island to Dammam pier and you can also book a boat across from the Corniche, and follow the views all around, looking back at Dammam itself. There are green open spaces and traditional mosques to admire as well as restaurants that sell local and regional food. Picnics and barbecues are also popular, as is fishing. This is also a real family affair – daily seal and dolphin shows are a must see.
5. Tarout Castle
It’s worth heading around 25km north of the city, to the Al Qatif region, to find this beautiful spot with its handsome castle. It offers some of the best photo opportunities as the sun sets over Tarout Island. If you take the trip up to one of the castle’s remaining towers, you’ll find staggering views all across the area.
It was renovated by Portuguese invaders in the 16th century, but there are signs of what was thought to be the original temple that dates back even further – potentially as far back as 5000BCE. It’s worth taking a guided tour of the castle to learn its full history.
6. Ithra
Otherwise known as The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, this is a forward-thinking creative destination and one of the leading cultural institutions in Saudi Arabia. It’s located in Dhahran, not far from Dammam.
Aside from its obvious draws, which include museums (including five galleries), a cinema, theatre, exhibitions and dining, it’s a wonderful location for an outdoor photo opportunity. Its distinctive exterior looms large over the landscape and lights up with the glow of the sun as it sets, creating a magical scene.
7. Kempinski Al Othman Hotel at Al Khobar
A luxurious place to lounge in Al Khobar, the Kempinski has everything you need for a five star experience, from a high-end spa to a number of fine dining options. Head to the Sky Lounge for a sunset drink with magnificent city views.
8. Sofitel Al Khobar
Around a 20 minute drive from Dammam, this dreamy, five-star hotel by Sofitel overlooks the uninterrupted views of the Corniche, with floor-to-ceiling windows throughout most of its spaces. This means stunning views of the sunset over the promenade while enjoying a coffee at breakfast, as well as from your bedroom, in the gym and while swimming in the pool. Be sure to request a room with a view.
