Even New York couldn’t entice Deema Almujadidi away from the UAE for long.
After graduating from the American University of Sharjah, where she majored in visual communication design, and working in Dubai for a couple of years, Riyadh-born Deema relocated to the so-nicknamed "City of Dreams" to continue studying – this time design management at Pratt institute. “I love how dynamic and diverse New York is,” she remembers.
However, despite staying in the US megalopolis after completing her master’s, Deema found herself inescapably drawn back to Dubai. She’s been based there ever since, working as a creative design manager in the luxury industry, saying: “Each project is an opportunity to merge art and functionality, a balance I find deeply satisfying.” Fully immersed in the city’s exciting and growing arts and culture community, she continues to thrive in her creative pursuits.
The most unique thing about the place? “Its people and how it’s always evolving,” she says.
Here Deema guides us through some of her favourite spots around the emirate she loves to call home.
Foodie Finds
Whenever she can, Deema explores Dubai’s eclectic dining scene. “One of my favourite spots is Paus,” she shares. “It’s a quaint café that doubles as a wellness studio, and my number one place for a quiet moment with a great cup of coffee.”
Another venue she rates is Bungalo 34, for its “chic yet relaxed atmosphere – and phenomenal view”. She always orders the Amalfi Lemon Pasta, followed by the Berry Pavlova for dessert. For an authentic local meal, Deema loves Arabian Tea House in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. “The traditional food, paired with the charming decor, makes it my top place to take visitors. Plus, the breakfast trays remind me of home.”
Self-Care Secrets
When it comes to topping up her internal energy reserves, the creative’s go-to is Talise Ottoman Spa, at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, on the edges of The Palm's fronds. “It’s my sanctuary for spoiling treatments, a sauna, steam, or dip in the pool,” she says.
For a unique spot for visitors to stay in the city, she’d recommend Shada Hotel, a boutique, family-owned venue with roots in Saudi. “The hotel’s warm atmosphere instantly makes guests feel at home,” Deema says. “And its nod to Saudi heritage in its decor adds an extra touch of authenticity.”
Learning the Craft
Deema is always on the lookout for new experiences that blend art and design, such as tufting classes at sxill lab or pottery at The Mud House - Dubai Pottery Studio. “These kinds of activities allow me to decompress and find balance amidst the city's fast-paced culture,” she says.
Her passion for design also leads her to more off-grid gems, such as Hobb Design & Visual Culture Bookshop, a small space with a wide selection of titles on the topic. “It’s a must-visit for any creative,” she says. Another recommendation is Al Safa Art & Design Library. “The open layout and inspiring architecture make it a great place to work or study,” Deema says.
State of the Art
Dubai’s dynamic arts scene is an aspect of the city Deema adores, with Alserkal Avenue as its beating heart.
The former industrial area is now home to dozens of galleries, coffeeshops and cafés, a yoga studio, and Cinema Akil, the first independent cinema in the GCC. Deema was also part of the team that launched A4 Space, a co-working venue in the area.“Each year, I look forward to Quoz Arts Fest,” shares Deema.“It’s a festival held in Alserkal that combines art installations, live music, and amazing food, making it one of the highlights of the year for my friends and I.” Just across from Alserkal Avenue lies Courtyard Playhouse – “another special place to visit for more artistic exploration”, according to Deema.
Her interest in the city’s creative community also extends to events such as Downtown Design Dubai, a fair that showcases innovative products and ideas from designers worldwide. “It’s a must-attend for anyone passionate about design,” enthuses Deema. “Art Dubai, the region’s leading international art fair, holds a special place in my heart too – it’s where I landed my first professional opportunity out of university.” Deema also thinks it’s the seed that eventually led her to become a member of the team behind Dubai Watch Week, a bi-annual event that revolves around horology, for the last four years. “I love streaming my passion for design through the lens of watches,”she says.
The UAE's Great Outdoors
Whenever the weather is particularly good, Deema loves to head out of the city in search of adventures. “Whether it’s hiking in Hatta or Khor Fakkan, or taking road trips with friends to Fujairah, the journey is always worth it,” she says. “Especially when we stop at Friday Market for grilled corn – that’s a treat I never miss.”
