Ramadan Lights London return to illuminate the West End

Illuminating the streets of the West End in London for the third year in a row, the Ramadan Lights London are set to return once again for 2025.

With a large Muslim population, the city of London will celebrate the period of Holy Month of Ramadan with a themed lights display - similar to those found throughout major European cities during the Christmas period.

Expected to turned on in an official ceremony on the first night of Ramadan, the first night of the Ramadan Lights London is slated to be either Friday February 28, or Saturday March 1. Last year's lighting ceremony was attended by former London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Ramadan marks a period of fasting for Muslims around the work; during this time Muslims will abstain from food and drinks daily, from dawn until sunset. Usually lasting for one month, the fasting period of Ramadan is often referred to as the Holy Month, and is a time of spiritual reflection and renewal of faith, as many Muslims hope to foster a deeper connection with their faith and Allah during this time.

Coventry Street in London's vibrant West End will be lit by the sparkling lights each evening throughout Ramadan, from February 28 to March 29.

This year the Ramadan Lights London will enhance its community focus, adding new experiences to its signature light display. This year's light trail introduces an interactive element for the first time, featuring a participatory light installation in Leicester Square. Visitors can engage with the installation by pressing a button to send beams of light soaring towards the structure, creating geometric stars and aerial displays that symbolise the spirit of Ramadan.

Brought to life and supported by Aziz Foundation, the charity says that the Ramadan Lights London project is an opportunity to embrace the entire community of the capital city: "This spectacular display serves as a powerful symbol of unity, interfaith harmony, and the vibrant multicultural spirit of London. More than just a visual spectacle, these radiant lights welcome people of all backgrounds, fostering a shared celebration of Ramadan’s values of peace, togetherness, and reflection."

The dazzling display will create a festive atmosphere, inviting all to experience the spirit of the Holy Month. And as Ramadan draws to a close and Eid al-Fitr approaches, the lights will be adapted from "Happy Ramadan," to read "Happy Eid," extending the celebratory ambiance until April 6. This coincides perfectly with the city's broader Eid al-Fitr festivities, including the popular annual Eid In The Square celebration held at Trafalgar Square, creating a unified sense of celebration across London.

The Story Behind Ramadan Lights

According to the BBC, the Ramadan Lights concept originated with Aisha Desai, a young Muslim from north London, and was inspired by her admiration for the annual Christmas light displays throughout the United Kingdom in December. It was with this in mind that Desai crafted her inaugural Ramadan lights display in Finchley.

And, since then, the concept has grown and been embraced by Muslim communities across the UK, and now has become an annual installation in London's famous West End location.
