From 1980s Legacy to Global Hub: KKIA's multi-billion dollar terminal revamp starts in 2026

Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) is gearing up for a fundamental strategic transformation in 2026.

Marking the facility's first extensive overhaul since its inauguration over 40 years ago, the operator, Riyadh Airports Company, has announced that the implementation of this major initiative is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026.

This comprehensive plan will introduce a sweeping and enhanced operational and organisational model that has been specifically designed to significantly boost capacity, improve efficiency, and enhance the overall passenger experience at the capital's main gateway, aligning with the rapid development goals of the city.

Terminal Reallocation and Operational Enhancements

Central to the upgrade is a large-scale operational transfer and re-designation of the existing terminals. The goal is to optimise passenger flow and restore the airport's original architectural identity while dramatically increasing throughput.

This major reorganisation is expected to achieve several benefits, including increasing the total terminal capacity and drastically reducing waiting and connection times. Riyadh Airports stated that this strategic reallocation will contribute to higher service quality and a smoother travel experience for both residents and international visitors.

The key changes to the Riyadh Airport's terminal functions are said to be as follows:

  • Terminal 5 will be exclusively dedicated to international flights operated by foreign airlines.
  • Terminals 3 and 4 will be re-designated to handle all domestic flights.
  • Terminal 2 is set to become the home location of international flights by both Saudia and Riyadh Air.
  • Terminals 1 will continue to serve international flights carried by low cost national airlines, such as Flyadeal and Flynas.

Future-Proofing Riyadh as a Travel Hub & Vision 2030

This comprehensive strategic transformation is one of the most prominent projects underpinning Riyadh Airports’ vision, aligning with the broader national goals being implemented in coordination with the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and the Airports Holding Company.

Beyond the terminal reassignments, this confirmed and extensive reinvigoration initiative includes the broader development measures aimed at generally improving operational efficiency and raising service standards across all aspects of the capital's airport. The final date for the full operational shift will be announced once all airport sectors and airline partners confirm their readiness for the change.

The transformation of King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) is slated to be a vital pillar supporting Saudi Vision 2030 by elevating Riyadh’s status as a global hub for business, tourism, and logistics. By significantly increasing passenger capacity and efficiency, the renovated KKIA directly supports the Vision's goal of raising the Kingdom’s ranking on the logistics performance index and growing the tourism sector, ultimately preparing the national infrastructure to accommodate the projected surge in international and domestic traffic required to diversify the economy and attract foreign investment.
