Even when removed entirely from your usual locale, by hundreds, if not thousands of miles, there are some places that feel immediately, inexplicably familiar the moment you arrive. Not because you have been before, but because they have been designed, knowingly and carefully, to feel like home. Ellerman House is one of those places.
Perched on the cliffs above Bantry Bay, above a shimmering expanse of Atlantic Ocean with views of the historic Robben Island on the horizon, Ellerman House is framed by the slopes of Lion's Head on one side and the curve of the Cape coastline stretching towards Camps Bay on the other. This Cape Edwardian mansion operates less as a hotel and more as a private residence that happens to have been opened, with extraordinary generosity I might add, to the world.
From the moment the heavy wooden door closes behind you and the ocean comes into view, its evident why this hotel has been awarded Two Michelin Keys and is part of the Relais & Chateaux hotels group. Here, the city of Cape Town, beautiful and energetic and close as it is, recedes entirely. And, what remains is space, light, art, and the kind of quiet confidence that only a place entirely sure of itself can offer.
In Short:
Ellerman House is an Edwardian mansion overlooking the waterside townlands of Cape Town, replete with one of Africa's most significant private art collections, and some of the most generous hospitality to exist on the continent. Here, these aspects, in addition to the never-ending views, conspire to make leaving feel like a genuinely unreasonable proposition.
The Location
Ellerman House sits on the slopes of Lion's Head in the prestigious Bantry Bay residential area — one of Cape Town's most exclusive and private suburbs along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Tucked into a cliffside position that delivers uninterrupted ocean views from almost every point on the property, across the Atlantic and out towards the faint outline of Robben Island on clear mornings.
Cape Town International Airport is approximately 30 minutes away by car, and the hotel includes complimentary airport transfers as part of the rate, a simple luxury detail that sets the tone immediately. The V&A Waterfront is just ten minutes away, and the world-famous beach towns of Clifton and Camps Bay are within easy walking distance or a short drive.
The Background
Built in 1906, Ellerman House was originally named Florida House and was the very first house to be built in Bantry Bay, claiming what now proves to be one of the finest positions on the mountainside. The Cape Edwardian mansion served as the summer residence of British shipping magnate Sir John Ellerman and his wife, and was built in the style of a gracious small country manor, designed quite deliberately for the enjoyment of the finer things in life.
The property was acquired by its current owner, Paul Harris — founder of Rand Merchant Bank and a founding member of the FirstRand Group — in 1988. After extensive renovations, Ellerman House opened its doors as a boutique hotel in 1992, initially with just seven elegantly decorated rooms. In the decades since, Mr. Harris, still a regular visitor, has expanded the property carefully and deliberately, adding new wings, a luxury spa only accessible to guests, and two contemporary private villas. The historic hillside home became a member of Relais & Châteaux in 2009. Impressively, the original Edwardian features — internal wooden columns, grand fireplaces, wide arched doorways, and the sweeping terraced gardens tumbling down the slopes of Lion's Head — remain entirely intact.
The Guests & Ambiance
The guest profile at Ellerman House reflects the property's character. These are seasoned, discerning travellers, a variety of people from around the world, who have stayed in the finest hotels on the planet. These are guests that value privacy, excellence in service and most importantly, substance over spectacle. From our small chats with other guests, it appears that return guests are extraordinarily loyal, and first-timers tend to rebook before they even check out.
Decidedly unhurried and warm, Ellerman House does not perform for its guests; there are no formal dress codes, no ritualised arrivals, no sense that the house is adjusting itself to impress you. It simply is what it is, and what it is happens to be extraordinary.
The communal spaces, a library with a working fireplace and a well-stocked collection of fiction, nonfiction, and art publications; elegant drawing rooms; a wide, sun-drenched terrace overlooking the ocean - feel genuinely lived in and warm. The property feels more like a home than a hotel. This feels a luxe yet relaxed setting where impeccable service and an extensive private art collection exist alongside an ease of atmosphere that is almost impossible to manufacture.
The Rooms & Suites
Ellerman House offers just 13 unique, individually styled rooms and suites in the main residence, each adorned with curated South African art and designed with a different character while sharing a consistent commitment to comfort, detail, and the integration of the extraordinary ocean views wherever possible. Rooms range from 30 to 50 square metres, with the majority with private balconies and sea-facing positions.
The interiors vary by room, some lean into the Edwardian character of the original house with period furniture, working fireplaces, and rich heritage fabrics; others take a more contemporary approach, but all are individually furnished and decorated, with original artworks on the walls that are as much a part of the room as the bed or the bath. The minibar in every room is fully stocked and complimentary, featuring a generous selection of local snacks and home made treats, a detail that speaks to the house's broader philosophy of genuine, unfettered generosity towards its guests.
For those seeking complete privacy, the two contemporary Villas — Villa One and Villa Two — sit adjacent to the main house and offer three bedrooms each, private pools, sweeping Atlantic views, and the services of a dedicated private chef who prepares all meals, snacks, and refreshments throughout the stay. The Villas were designed as a contemporary complement to the Edwardian grandeur of the main house — sleeker in aesthetic, with floor-to-ceiling glass and heated floors — but equally immersed in the art collection, with larger contemporary works that suit the scale and spirit of the spaces.
The Dining
Dining at Ellerman House operates on the same philosophy as everything else at the property: generous, considered, and entirely without fuss. Breakfast, served on the wide ocean-facing OneEighty restaurant, spans a simple continental spread, alongside made-to-order classics, and is included in the rate. The same restaurant also serves an internationally inspired dinner menu where dishes change regularly, and the entire menu embraces seasonal and local produce.
Set within the property's striking, structural Wine Gallery, Curate is an intimate, 30-seat culinary destination that completely reimagines South African heritage flavours. Led by Ellerman House Executive Chef Kieran Whyte, the restaurant moves away from international fine-dining trends to focus entirely on an ingredient-driven narrative of South Africa's soil and sea. This is a multi-course dining experience that is one of the most sought after bookings in Cape Town.
From 5pm a sunset social takes place at Bar Roc. This petite hidden bar is tucked under the grand columned veranda at eye level with the Atlantic Ocean. Each evening guests are treated to a selection of curated canapés served as the sun drops below the horizon, for no additional cost. Guests are warmly invited to join together, mingle or watch the sun set, and luxuriate in the live music and pre-dinner feels.
But, the true highlight at Ellerman House has to be the 24-hour guest pantry. It is one of the most beloved features of the property — a small, always-stocked room of homemade pastries, sweet treats, savoury bites, fresh smoothies, and late-night cake that operates entirely on the honour of the house. There is no charge, no record, and no limit. It is simply there for whenever you need it, and guests tend to discover it early and visit it often. The kitchen also prepares personalised snack packs for transfers or day trips, expect a selection of homemade biltong, spiced nuts, seasonal fruits.

Wellness & Spa
The outdoor swimming pool is heated, and dramatically framed by the property's manicured, terraced lawns, towering palm trees and sculptural art pieces. The surrounding pool area acts as a tranquil, sun-drenched sanctuary, offering uninterrupted views across Bantry Bay. Guests are not only treated to coolers of beverages and snacks, the pool experience is completed with plush loungers, fluffy towels and flawless poolside service.
The Ellerman House Spa is available exclusively to resident guests, a detail that ensures the intimacy and privacy that the property prizes throughout. Internationally qualified therapists offer a menu of 30 treatments, spanning skincare, body rituals, and restorative massages, with a philosophy that places comfort, exclusivity, and genuine service above all else. A petite yet fully equipped gym sits quietly within the estate for those who want it, as does a yoga and stretching studio.
The Staff & Service
Throughout our stay, the service at Ellerman House was nothing short of world-class, and proved consistently seamless without a single exception. The team is attentive without being intrusive, blending professional precision with a distinct South African warmth, here you will experience a kind of genuine hospitality that no amount of training can replicate. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed by first name, making the relationship less like clients and more like returning family.
The team is small enough to know every guest by name and preference within hours of arrival. If you order a cappuccino for example, more than once, its likely that the staff will remember and have it ready for you before you even ask. The concierge team operates less as a booking service and more as a trusted local friend and local resource. When I casually mentioned needing a lock for my luggage ahead of my return flight, the team immediately went to work. Without a moment's hesitation, and driven by a sincere desire to help, they sourced a number of locks before I even returned to my room.
Transfers, art tours, restaurant reservations, hiking guides, winery visits — all are arranged with the same unhurried attentiveness that characterises every interaction at the property. A discreet round-the-clock security team ensures uninterrupted safety and comfort throughout the stay, with the kind of invisible professionalism that the best private residences in the world are built upon.
Something Standout: The Art Collection
There are many things at Ellerman House that cannot be found elsewhere, but the one that stays with guests longest, the detail they speak about months after their stay, often to people who have never heard of the property, is the art.
Ellerman House is home to the most significant private collection of South African art in the country. Owner, Mr Harris began collecting South African art in the early 1980s, and as the house developed, so the collection grew. It now constitutes what is widely regarded as the most significant private collection of South African art in the country, with over 1,000 works spanning two centuries of history, from colonial-era paintings by Edmund Pink and Thomas Bowler through to contemporary works by Nelson Makamo, Dianne Victor, and Penny Siopis.
The collection is not kept in storage or behind ropes, it lives throughout the house, on every wall, around every corner, in every room, as naturally and deliberately as the furniture itself. Sculptures occupy the garden terraces. The art accumulates, quietly and powerfully, into an experience that is entirely unique in luxury hospitality: a stay inside a living, breathing, carefully curated cultural institution. Guests can also enjoy guided tours of the art pieces in the main house, the gardens and the Contemporary Gallery by the hotel's own in-house art guide who offers complimentary personalised tours by appointment.
The Ellerman House Contemporary Gallery opened in December 2009, as a dedicated space, beneath the pool area. It was created by Harris to house more modern and eclectic art pieces and sculptures that tonally contrasted with the property’s main Edwardian mansion. The gallery is open to guests to wander at leisure, and showcases an ever-evolving, seasonally rotated selection of South Africa’s most celebrated modern masters and boundary-pushing contemporary visionaries. Featured artists include William Kentridge, Lionel Smit, Sam Nhlengethwa, Angus Taylor, Marco Cianfanelli, and Cameron Platter.
