What is a MICHELIN Key? How is this distinction awarded?
The MICHELIN Key is a prestigious new distinction introduced by the MICHELIN Guide in 2024 to recognise the world’s most exceptional hotels — much like the MICHELIN Star does for restaurants. The distinction and trust recommendation guide has been designed to help travellers identify accommodations that go beyond the ordinary, offering not just a place to stay, but a truly memorable experience.
Hotels are awarded one, two, or three MICHELIN Keys, depending on the quality and distinctiveness of their offering. Importantly, only hotels already selected for the MICHELIN Guide are eligible, and from this curated pool, the most outstanding are awarded MICHELIN Keys. The goal is to spotlight properties that offer more than luxury — they must deliver authenticity, creativity, and a sense of discovery.
These three distinctions (one key, two keys and the highest rated, three keys) are based on a careful evaluation process carried out by anonymous experts who assess a range of elements to determine how well each hotel stands out in its category, including criteria such as; architectural and interior design excellence, quality and consistency of service, distinct personality and character, value for the price, and contribution to the local setting or community.
For luxury travellers, the Michelin Key offers a trusted benchmark in a sea of online reviews. For hoteliers, it’s a powerful endorsement that can elevate visibility and set a new standard in hospitality.
