Saudi Arabia is leading the charge in futuristic transportation with its development of flying taxis.
These electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOL) promise to revolutionise urban mobility by offering passengers a quick and efficient travel option. As the Kingdom continues to invest in cutting edge technology, and looks to use and harness alternative energy options, flying taxis are set to become a common site in the nation's cities.
In January of this year it was confirmed that flying taxis would be in operation across the Kingdom by 2026.
According to the latest update announced by Saudia Aviation on X (formerly Twitter), these eVTOL will service destinations such as Makkah, Qiddiya City, NEOM and the Red Sea region.
The soon-to-be-introduced flying taxis will have the ability to reach speeds of up to 250km/h and be able to travel distances of up to 175km in any one trip. After much testing, it has also been confirmed that the eVTOL will only take up to 15 minutes to charge. These taxis will seat up to 6 passengers, and will not require an airport or special landing zone to operate.
A successful test flight of the eVTOL vehicle took place above NEOM in June of 2023, further advancing the movement towards flying taxis becoming a thing of the very near future. It is hoped that these flights would become autonomous by 2026 to allow for additional passengers and ease of movement across the Kingdom.
