AlUla, the ancient desert oasis in northwestern Saudi Arabia, is set to become a hub for space exploration and astro-tourism. Yes, you read that right.

The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has entered into a groundbreaking collaboration with the renowned SETI Institute to develop the AlUla Manara Observatory.

AlUla Manara Observatory

This state-of-the-art facility will be equipped with advanced telescopes and research equipment, enabling scientists to study the cosmos and search for extraterrestrial life. The observatory will also serve as a platform for education and public engagement, inspiring future generations of scientists and astronomers.

The partnership will see the installation of a LaserSETI instrument at the observatory, joining a global network dedicated to detecting potential signs of extraterrestrial technology. Additionally, the SETI Institute will support data analysis, instrument development, and educational programs for local communities.

As AlUla continues to emerge as a global destination for culture and heritage, the AlUla Manara Observatory adds a new dimension to its appeal, positioning the region as a centre for scientific discovery and exploration.

Saudi Making Significant Steps to Explore Space

Saudi Arabia has already made significant strides in its space program, marking a new era for the nation.

In early 2023, the Kingdom launched a historic mission to the International Space Station (ISS), featuring the first Saudi woman astronaut, Rayyanah Barnawi, which captured global attention. The privately funded mission saw two Saudi nationals blast off to the outer rims of the atmosphere as part of Axiom-2 mission. This was a pioneering endeavour signifying Saudi Arabia's growing ambition to become a leading player in the global space industry.
