Following on from her first whistle-stop tour of Geneva, Saudi traveller, Donna AlSudairi takes us to her next Swiss destination - Zurich. A city nestled amidst the majestic Swiss Alps, Zurich offers visitors a captivating blend of natural beauty and urban sophistication.
A Saudi's Guide to Zurich
Its crystal-clear lakes, charming old town, and world-class museums offer a unique and unforgettable experience for every visitor. As you wander through the city's picturesque streets, you'll be greeted by stunning architecture, lush green spaces, and a vibrant cultural scene.
Whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, Zurich has something to offer everyone. These are Donna's top recommendations for a visit to Zurich:
Where to Stay
Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich
Once the iconic Hotel Baur, Zurich's first grand hotel that hosted notable figures like Charles Dickens, Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich is centrally located on Paradeplatz.
Under the guidance of Parisian designer Tristan Auer, the hotel’s restoration preserved its historical elements while blending in modern luxury. Its 44 rooms and 36 suites feature rich materials like walnut, bronze, and luxurious textiles. The interiors honour Zurich’s heritage, incorporating green hues reminiscent of the city’s iconic church spires, creating a serene home-away-from-home atmosphere.
I stayed in a Junior Suite, which came with a spacious dressing area and coffee bar. I loved the soft cotton kimonos – perfect or ultimate lounging comfort in the room after a busy day exploring. The hotel boasts a small but complete fitness centre with state-of-the-art gym equipment and the opportunity to work with a personal trainer.

What to Do
Frauenbad Stadthausquai
This picturesque spot is perfect for a tranquil day by the water. Surrounded by beautiful plants and offering spectacular views of the Old Town, the art deco bathhouse exudes a traditional vibe with plenty of privacy for sunbathing. Grab some food and drinks, sit back and indulge in this idyllic setting - which is particularly popular during the summer months.
Kunsthaus Zürich
Switzerland’s largest museum boasts a vast collection, spanning from the 13th century to the present. Highlights include Monet's Water Lilies, van Gogh's self-portraits, and works by Picasso, Renoir, Warhol, and Rembrandt.
Walk around the Old Town
Zurich's Old Town, or Altstadt, is a captivating journey through time. Its narrow, cobblestone streets wind their way through centuries-old buildings, each with its own unique story to tell. The Fraumünster, with its stunning stained-glass windows designed by Marc Chagall, and the Grossmünster, a Romanesque double church, are architectural gems that stand as testaments to the city's rich history. As you wander through the charming alleyways, you'll discover quaint shops, cozy cafes, and picturesque squares, each offering a glimpse into Zurich's past.
Where to Eat
Neumarkt
Tucked away in the Old Town, Neumarkt offers rustic charm with a large outdoor terrace, ideal for warmer months. The restaurant collaborates closely with local farmers to create flavourful and sustainable fare.
Savoy Brasserie & Bar
This chic Gatsby-inspired restaurant, with indoor and outdoor seating, is an all-day dining spot that serves breakfast for hotel guests. The menu blends refined French flavours with classic Swiss dishes, including the Zurich specialty, Zürcher Geschnetzeltes.
Top Tip
During good weather, head up to Mandarin Oriental Savoy’s 1838 rooftop bar, named after the original hotel's opening year. Possibly the world’s oldest rooftop bar, it blends elegance with modern flair, featuring olive green hues and a lush living wall. Pre-dinner sunset drinks allow you to enjoy the stunning views of the Old Town rooftops.
