China is a country so vast it encompasses an unending array of vistas and climates from mountains to deserts, cities and beaches; it’s a mosaic that proves the nation’s luxury and cultural depth extends far beyond metropolises like Shanghai and Beijing, making destinations like Hangzhou utterly essential for any serious traveller.
I'm lucky to be able to say that my passport is well-stamped with Far East favourites like Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Japan, but this journey marked my first visit to the Chinese mainland. After experiencing it firsthand, I can assure you it was a revelation, even for a seasoned traveller. It certainly won't be the last time I travel here.
In Short:
This 84-key property, a seamless tapestry of traditional architecture and contemporary comfort, offers guests an exclusive gateway to the cultural heart of Hangzhou, providing a masterclass in highly personalised service against the serene backdrop of its private lagoon gardens.
Visa Details for China
With 28 countries including the UAE and Saudi Arabia now eligible for visa-free visits to China, the allure of the Forbidden City, the jaw-dropping views of the Great Wall, almost 150 Michelin-starred restaurants and the awe-inspiring metropolises of cities such as Shanghai and Beijing, China has a lot of offer.
Although not a permanent change to the visa process for Saudis visiting China, the visa-free travel agreement was introduced on June 9, 2025 and running until June 8, 2026. This new visa-free policy allows Saudi tourists to visit China for up to thirty days without the need to go through a visa or e-visa process.
Getting There
Now with regular direct flights connecting both the Saudi Arabia and the UAE to various cities in China, in addition to no need for make lengthy visa applications, the Far East is opening up and indeed welcoming travellers from the Middle East.
Four weekly direct flights with China Eastern Airlines connect Riyadh to Shanghai, and Four Seasons Hotel at Hangzhou West Lake is approximately two hours from Shanghai's Pudong Airport (PVG). Once you have international data (and access to a translation app) Ubers and taxis from the airport are easy to come by, or the team at Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at West Lake can arrange a private car to pick you up.
The Location & Design
The Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at West Lake claims an unrivalled and deeply evocative location within the historical heart of the city. Located on the edges of the northwest corner of the famed West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage site, despite being just a stroll from the local high street, the property feels like a private, secluded sanctuary despite its urban surroundings.
The low-slung, traditional architecture — designed in the classic Jiang Nan style — is seamlessly integrated into 17 acres of exquisite Chinese gardens, waterways, and bamboo forests. This meticulous design ensures that nearly all of the rooms and suites overlook either the tranquil gardens and incredible architecture, or a quiet section of the famous West Lake. The setting is consistently praised by guests for its serene tranquility and its ability to connect them with the cultural landscape, all while remaining conveniently accessible to the city's main sights and a short walk from the iconic West Lake Impression show.
The Guests & Ambiance
Despite being set on a sprawling, 17-acre property set right beside the renowned West Lake, the hotel manages to feel surprisingly intimate and secluded.
The defining feature of Four Seasons at Hangzhou West Lake is that of an atmosphere of serene, tranquil seclusion; the moment you pass the entry gates, the typical city buzz melts away, replaced by the dancing song of nature. It truly feels like a city escape that exists miles away from any major hub. My fellow travellers consistently noted that it felt as though we were "living inside a park," which is something I certainly never expected during my first visit to China.
This immersion in extensive green spaces and open natural areas was a delightful surprise, with the atmosphere seamlessly blending ultra-luxury comfort with a timeless, peaceful environment. It serves as the perfect sanctuary for unwinding after a day of sightseeing at the adjacent UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Rooms & Suites
With just 84 generously spacious rooms and suites, the accommodations are spread across just two floors due to local height restrictions, ensuring the building maintains a low-profile aesthetic that blends with the landscape, but this layout also ensures privacy for guests. While offering a wide selection of luxurious room and suite categories, the hotel also uniquely features two standalone villa options: a One-Bedroom and a spectacular Three-Bedroom property. Complete with private, Chinese-style gardens and a private pool and gym, these villas provide international guests and families with an enticing combination of seclusion and luxury, making them ideal for families, groups, or the most romantic of escapes.
Stylistically, the rooms are contemporary yet classic, dark wood meets fresh, crisp white linens as light pours in from the shuttered veranda. I stayed in a classic 'Courtyard Room' and like all Four Seasons properties, elements of the interiors have been specifically tailored to the location, and there are plentiful nods to traditional Chinese design throughout the room. Depending on the room type, these thoughtful design details and considered touches include exquisite satin embroidery depicting Chinese flora and fauna. It is these small details that truly bring a property to life, and separate it from others. In addition to the well curated decor, I was greeted with a stunning selection of welcome treats such as chocolate in the shape of pagodas and bridges that are found around the West Lake, and a brightly coloured bowl of fresh, tropical fruits.
The Dining
For local foodies, Four Seasons Hangzhou is a dining destination in itself, anchored by the revered Chinese fine-dining restaurant, Jin Sha.
Having garnered significant local and international accolades, including One Michelin Star for three consecutive years, Jin Sha, meaning “golden sand”, is the hotel’s culinary jewel. Under the culinary direction of Executive Chef Wang Yong, the focus is on elevated Zhejiang, Shanghainese, and Cantonese cuisine, showcasing a menu dishes that use the finest seasonal and local ingredients. The restaurant itself is architecturally stunning, featuring a number of stand-alone private dining pavilions set around a serene garden lagoon, offering an unparalleled setting for an intimate feast.
Beyond Jin Sha, the hotel also hosts West Lake Bistro for a more relaxed, but equally delicious menu of Italian and Western fare. But one unmissable dining experience is the early morning private breakfast served aboard a traditional wooden barge whilst sailing on a secluded part of the inner West Lake, this offers guest the opportunity to see more and have a uniquely Hangzhou experience.
Wellness & Spa
The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at West Lake has been meticulously designed as a tranquil, full-sensory retreat. The hum of music, the trickle of water features and low lighting is the perfect invitation to enjoy this spa experience.
The menu perfectly complements this atmosphere, artfully combining globally recognised beauty treatments with authentic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Asian therapies, often including a bespoke pre-treatment Five Elements Consultation to completely personalise the wellness journey.
While the treatment menu is certainly luxurious and thoughtfully created, one design detail truly elevates the experience: the facility is conceived to resemble a sophisticated Chinese palace or collection of private pavilions. To reach the nine generously sized treatment rooms, guests must follow a path of stone walkways seemingly floating above reflective water features, an immersive journey that immediately allows the sounds of the city to dissipate. This intentional layout creates a space of spiritual serenity that feels wholly removed from the world and busy city outside.
Finish your treatment with some relaxation time in the private baths of the pavilion, then transition to the final fulfilment of your immersive Chinese ritual with an expertly chosen, locally sourced tea.
Beyond the uniquely designed treatment rooms, guests can utilise the year-round indoor swimming pool and a fully equipped fitness centre, all while surrounded by the sight of the peaceful, manicured gardens, creating a deeply restorative environment that feels miles away from the modern world.
