Riyadh Air has revealed the first images of its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner showcasing a striking new indigo livery.

Fresh from the paint shop at Boeing's official facility in Charleston, South Carolina, the newly released images and the new fleet rollout marks a major visual evolution for the expanding Saudi Arabian airline.

Far from being a mere stylistic choice, the lavender and indigo palette at the heart of Riyadh Air’s brand identity is a deeply symbolic design language engineered by London design agency PriestmanGoode. According to the airline, approximately one in every ten aircraft across the Riyadh Air fleet will be decked out in the distinctive indigo colourway, establishing a recognisable presence as the carrier scales its global operations.

In Saudi Arabia, lavender is the official ceremonial colour; the Saudi government uses lavender-coloured carpets for state receptions and official protocols, replacing the traditional red carpet that most nations use, to signify warmth, generosity, and Saudi hospitality to international guests.

The airline's signature purple toned hues also pay direct homage to the wild lavender fields that bloom across northern and central Saudi Arabia in spring. This seasonal shift transforms arid landscapes into vivid purple carpets, making lavender an enduring symbol of natural beauty across the Kingdom. Additionally, PriestmanGoode also notes that the broader colour scheme pairs deep amethyst purple or indigo with lighter lavender and a pearlescent white. These colours were chosen with purpose, aiming to capture the shifting gradients of the desert sky from twilight to sunrise.

Bringing this colourway into the interior of the aircrafts, the seats also echo this colour scheme. The aircraft's mood lighting inside the cabin uses soft lavender spectrums to reduce jet lag and evoke a relaxed, lounge-like ambiance during flight.

The aircraft is scheduled for delivery in the near future and will soon appear at one of the 15 international airports served by the airline.

"Seeing our first Indigo aircraft emerge from the paint shop is a proud moment for Riyadh Air," said CEO Tony Douglas, according to the airline's website. "Inspired by the colours of spring desert blooms and the beauty of Arabic calligraphy, the indigo livery positions our brand with a striking presence that will stand out at airports across the world." Douglas added that, alongside the airline's pearlescent livery, the new design reflects "a modern, confident Saudi identity, and marks another significant milestone as we have grown to 10 aircraft and 15 destinations in less than four months."
