Rediscover the beauty of Arabic calligraphy in Riyadh

The second edition of 'Scripts and Calligraphy' will showcase works under the theme of "Paths to the Soul".

In 2020, Saudi Arabia led a successful collaboration with fifteen other Arab countries to have Arabic calligraphy recognised by UNESCO and added to the official List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, consolidating its status as a global symbol of Arab culture.

Through the theme of Paths to the Soul, the Scripts and Calligraphy exhibit will showcase, recognise and celebrate the artistic and cultural significance of calligraphy, which holds a central position within Arab culture and identity.

The event will feature 53 calligraphers and contemporary artists from twelve different countries, including the works of 16 Saudi creatives.

Running from June 11 through to September 2 in Riyadh, the exhibit will delve into the spiritual aspects of calligraphy and explore the profound impact of lettering and calligraphy on the Arab and Islamic world, with specific reference to four different secondary themes: light, letter, space, and poetry.

Designed by acclaimed architects and scenographers Jean-Paul Boulanger, Margo Renisio, and Tang Tuck, the exhibition will acknowledge the importance of these secondary themes, there will be four separate sections.

This second edition of Scripts and Calligraphy, will present a diverse collection of Islamic artworks and rare manuscripts, sourced from the esteemed permanent collection of the Saudi Ministry of Culture. Additionally, the exhibition will feature unique pieces on loan from renowned institutions such as the Museum of the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and the National Heritage Institute in Tunis. The showcase will also include a selection of works generously provided by private collectors from various regions.

The ministry is committed to preserving Arabic calligraphy as a treasured aspect of the Kingdom’s identity and cultural heritage.
