Al Balad in Jeddah is a historic district renowned for its traditional architecture, narrow alleyways, and bustling souks, offering visitors a glimpse into the city's traditional ways and rich cultural heritage.

The area is beautifully punctuated by restored coral stone buildings, each adorned with intricate wooden latticework and distinctive, decorative doors, and is the ideal showcase of the region's unique architectural style.

And on March 2, fitness fanatic from the region will race through Al Balad and the gorgeous Corniche as part of the aptly named Jeddah Historic Half Marathon.

What is a half marathon you ask? Or more importantly, how long is a half marathon?

A half marathon race usually covers a distance of 21.1 kilometres (given an official full marathon is 42.2 kilometres), and the Jeddah Historic Half Marathon will be taking place around the Al Balad district. However, there will also be a 10km and 5km, and even 1km race for those not quite ready to take on the long distance run but wanting to tick off a New Year's challenge.

Starting (and ending) at historic gate of Bab Jadid, the race is set to begin at 6am.

A hub for artists and local artisans, Al Balad is the vibrant old town area of Jeddah, unveiling the deep history of Jeddah as a trading port, visitors can still explore local souks and markets where local businesses sell everything from spices and textiles to handmade crafts. Perfect for a post-race wander to keep the legs moving.
