Do you need a break from the blistering heat of the city this summer? Dream of losing yourself in nature but not too keen on roughing it out in the wilderness?

Then look no further than Ahway’s mountain cabins situated in Al Shafa, a mountain village neighbouring Taif and located a mere two and a half hour drive from Jeddah.

After easily finding our way, thanks to fool-proof directions and the signs we saw approaching the campsite, we turned off the main street and up the charming little dirt road. The security guard who greeted us, checked our reservation, and gave us directions to our cabin, turned out to be the only staff member we encountered during our getaway.

The self-check-in process, with the cabin’s access code shared via WhatsApp prior to arrival, is very smooth, not to mention essential to the feeling of disconnect and seclusion. We also got a detailed guideline that included information such as the area’s different wildlife ahead of our stay, boosting the no contact philosophy even further.

The generously spaced cabins give guests an added touch of privacy too, while the guidelines on respecting quiet time in the early mornings and late evenings allow for some blissful peace. The campsite includes five caravan cabins: Love, Freedom, Hope, Peace, and Joy. With their wooden exteriors and neutral tones, they blend in beautifully with the surrounding nature (even in the summertime the area is lush and the temperature is moderate.)

To make the most out of outdoor living, each cabin includes an adjoining picnic table covered by a tarp and two patio chairs facing a fire pit. Firewood, fire starter cubes, and a lighter are provided, so make sure you pack your s’mores kit. With large windows overlooking stunning mountain views all around, the cabin gives you the feeling of being right in nature, while providing all the essential comforts. All cabins include an air conditioning unit and a double bed (some have double bunk beds so make sure you check before booking).

It’s a small but extremely well-organised and comfortable space. Wooden cubbies allow you to stow away your luggage, and a small kitchenette is fully stocked with most essentials, including a fridge and induction stove. The sleek wooden interiors create a modern and cosy atmosphere and there is high level of attention to aesthetic detail.

We loved the personal touches included in the cabins, such as the mobile phone lock box that encourages guests to truly disconnect and enjoy their escape. After checking in, we decided to explore the grounds on foot and discovered the campsite’s quaint little farm, which is open to explore and is home to different fruit trees and flowers. The surrounding area is quiet and dotted with rustic farmhouses and residences.

With dinner time approaching, we decided to go into town by car – about 10 minutes away – in search for some food. The dining options are quite limited in Al Shafa, with the only chain, Domino’s Pizza, offering a takeaway option. However, there are some local burger, chicken, and rice eateries along the main road. We settled on some falafel sandwiches from Abo Antar, which honestly exceeded our expectations. The main road is also lined with coffee shops and convenience stores for anything you might need or have forgotten to pack.

We set out early the next morning to go on a short hike before the sun got too hot. Al Shafa is famous for its hiking, but the trails are unmarked and therefore not so easy to find without a guide. A personal favourite spot is the Al Hait Valley, which offers different route options with varying difficulty levels, while the nestled patches of flat grass and babbling brooks also make it an ideal picnic spot. (Note: although you don't need a special car to access the Ahway campsite, make sure you come in a 4x4 if you are planning to visit Al Hait Valley.)

With grumbling stomachs, we returned to our cabin – grateful for the chance to shower and prepare a well-earned breakfast. As well as our provisions from Jeddah, we had everything else we needed, conveniently provided for us in the kitchen. After a hearty plate of eggs and pancakes enjoyed on the picnic table outside, we sent a little checkout message to our host and set off back to Jeddah, while already discussing plans for our next stay.
