Going out after dark in Doha means bright lights, cooler temperatures and for many, a fresh wave of energy for making the most of the city’s nightlife. Yes, there are bars and clubs for those who want to party until the wee hours, but there are also all sorts of interesting cultural activities on offer in the capital too.

There are museums and galleries that host evening exhibitions, stargazing under the clear desert skies and restaurants with dazzling views over the illuminated capital. Many Qataris and expats stay out late with their families to make the most of the breezy evening weather, so you can expect a calm, safe atmosphere and well-lit, lively public spaces after dark. Here are some of the top things to do at night in Doha.

1. Stroll along Doha Corniche

Doha Corniche is a seven-kilometre waterfront promenade that really comes alive at night. Locals, expats and tourists stroll along the palm-lined paths, enjoying cool evening breezes as the capital’s dazzling skyscrapers light up the sky. There’s plenty to do along this tranquil stretch of the city, most of it completely free. The many parks, gardens and playgrounds are great places for a short break or an evening picnic. And there are several landmarks and art installations to look out for on the route. Richard Serra’s ‘7’ sculpture sits on the far southern edge of the MIA Park, and a giant shell sculpture and water fountain, celebrating Qatar's rich pearl diving history is located near the Dhow Harbour.

2. Take a sunset dhow cruise

Perhaps the best place to view Doha by night is from the water itself. Old-style wooden dhow boats with their distinctive triangular sails are a common sight on Doha’s waters, and were historically used for fishing or trading. Nowadays, most have been adapted for tourists, so you can take a sunset cruise and admire the scenery while the boat passes iconic sights such as the Corniche, Katara Cultural Village and The Pearl Qatar. Some boat rides include an on-board barbecue or buffet meal while others offer Arabic coffee, dates and other traditional Qatari snacks. Cruises usually take around two hours.

3. Shop for souvenirs at Souq Waqif

One of the liveliest spots in the city, especially after dark, is undoubtedly Souq Waqif. This bustling market comes alive after sundown, the alleyways filling up with traders and shoppers, while street performers and local musicians add to the lively atmosphere. It’s a great place to shop for authentic Qatari souvenirs, and you’ll find everything from spices and perfumes to woven fabrics handicrafts for sale in the stalls. Gentle haggling with the vendors can be a fun part of the experience, and is a great way to start up a conversation. After you’ve finished shopping, grab a table at one of the restaurants for a  Middle Eastern feast of grilled meats, fresh salads and flavoursome rice dishes.

4. Enjoy a late viewing at the Museum of Islamic Art

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is stunning at night, its illuminated IM Pei-designed architecture glowing against the city skyline, and the adjacent park open 24/7. The museum is open every evening until 7pm and for night-owls, until 9pm on Thursdays. During these quieter evening hours, visitors can make the most of the fantastic displays of Islamic art and artefacts. Permanent collections include historic manuscripts, jewellery, woodwork and textiles, mostly from across the Middle East, while temporary exhibitions include themes such as mosques, fashion and feasting traditions. The museum’s Michelin-starred Mediterranean restaurant IDAM by Alain Ducasse also stays open for dinner on Thursdays, so book a table in advance for a treat of an evening.

5. Stargaze under the desert skies

Far from the light pollution of the cities, Qatar’s expansive desert is the perfect place to lie back and look at the clear, starry night sky. There’s a rich tradition of stargazing in Qatar, as the nomadic Bedouin people used to navigate the desert using the moon and stars as a guide. While stargazing can be done in most desert locations, the most highly recommended dark sky regions are the Inland Sea and Al Kharrara in South Qatar and the west coast’s Ras Abrouq. Star gazing is most rewarding (and safest) when done as part of a night-time tour, and several tour operators offer dedicated excursions from Doha.

6. Eat out at The Pearl Qatar

Doha’s Pearl Qatar is a man-made island known for its glamorous holiday atmosphere, and at night it turns into a vibrant hub of dining and nightlife. The marinas are lined with elegant restaurants and cafes, many with outdoor seating that overlooks the water. For a memorable night out, book a table at one of the upscale Mediterranean or seafood restaurants and enjoy an evening meal in the heart of the city’s action. After you’ve eaten, walk it off with a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk to take in the twinkling lights, bobbing yachts and late-night urban buzz.

7. Head to one of Doha’s bars and nightclubs

Many of the city’s hotels have nightclubs and lounges that stay open until the small hours. For dancing, great DJs and a party atmosphere, try Black Orchid or Phaze. There are also plenty of sophisticated hotel bars where you can chat and relax over a drink or two, such as the Manhattan-inspired Cortland Bar at the Waldorf Astoria. In most late-night venues in Doha, you can expect a trendy, dressed-up crowd. Entry requirements and dress codes are usually enforced, so check each venue’s policy before you go. For special events or DJ nights, it’s wise to reserve a table in advance.

8. Catch a performance at the National Theatre or Opera House

Doha has a growing performing arts scene, and many venues host evening shows, concerts, and cultural performances. The Qatar National Theatre and the Katara Opera House are top venues where you can watch everything from Arabic plays to international ballet and orchestral performances. Schedules vary, so it’s best to check local events booking sites in advance.
