Abdulaziz Albalawi on how AlUla's ancient wonder has inspired and fuelled his passion

AlUla, where ancient history meets untamed landscapes, has transformed into one of Saudi’s most captivating destinations.

For Abdulaziz Albalawi, better known as Aziz AlUla, this vast expanse of mountains, valleys, and oases isn’t just home; it’s a canvas that has fuelled his career as a photographer.

With Aziz AlUla as your guide, we uncover the stories, landscapes, and hidden corners of AlUla, an extraordinary tranquil and storied region.

From Passion to Profession

"I grew up surrounded by AlUla’s diverse terrain – its dramatic canyons, sweeping deserts, and verdant oases. That connection to nature led me to photography," Aziz, who likes to describe himself as a local artist specialising in photography, shares. His camera work, which began as a hobby, evolved into a professional pursuit thanks to the launch of Saudi’s Vision 2030 – a transformative blueprint that has positioned AlUla as a global tourism hotspot. “It’s inspiring to see my home recognised on the world stage," he adds.

A Re-Imagination

Once a vital hub for ancient trade routes, the region is now re-conceptualised as a bridge between civilisations.

“AlUla has always been a cultural treasure,” Aziz says. “But today, it’s so much more – a place where the past and present converge.” Previously visited by a trickle of travellers drawn to its ancient rock carvings at Hegra, AlUla now attracts a skyrocketing number of visitors from around the world, thanks to its growing portfolio of cultural initiatives, infrastructure improvements, and world-class resorts, which are in harmony with their natural surroundings, “offering unparalleled luxury without disrupting the environment”.

Aziz’s AlUla

If there’s one person who knows the region’s best-kept secrets, it’s Aziz. “If a close friend visited, I’d insist they stay a week to truly experience AlUla’s magic,” he muses. His ideal itinerary includes: Hegra, Saudi’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site showcasing Nabataean tombs; Dadan, a glimpse into the ancient Dadanite civilisation; and AlUla Old Town, a living museum showcasing Islamic-era architecture and sustainable practices.

"I’d also recommend spending time in Sharaan Nature Reserve, where re-wilding efforts are underway, including the reintroduction of the Arabian leopard and oryx. A safari tour here is unmissable," Aziz adds.

For those seeking solitude, the famous reference suggests hiking the ancient trails, where centuries-old paths offer tranquillity amidst rugged landscapes, or meditating among AlUla’s majestic rock formations. “Spending time in the mountains or engaging in farming provides me with a profound sense of peace and positivity,” he shares.

Dine and Stay

AlUla’s culinary scene blends global sophistication with local authenticity, with seasonal pop-ups from Europe’s finest kitchens meeting enduring favourites. "The Greek restaurant OKTO [at Harrat Viewpoint] is a must-visit, as is SOMEWHERE, in the Old Town, for its Saudi-inspired flavours. For something upscale, head to Tama in Habitas AlUla," Aziz advises.

When it comes to accommodation, the creative behind Nabatean Studio highlights the contrast between the luxurious and the authentic. "If you want a unique experience, try Dar Tantora, where rooms are electricity-free, offering a taste of life as it once was. For contemporary luxury, the newly opened The Chedi Hegra, near The Hejaz Railway, is a stunning choice." There’s something for every traveller. “I love indulging in a day pass at luxury resorts, enjoying spas, pools, and gourmet dining. But for a truly immersive experience, Dar Tantora’s simplicity is unmatched.”

Hidden Gems and Unchartered Wonders

Aziz, a Sony Alpha ambassador, reveals that only 20% of AlUla’s treasures have been explored. “Most visitors only scratch the surface of what AlUla has to offer," he notes. The photographer points to Harrat Uwayrid, a volcanic plateau steeped in history, offering thrilling zip line adventures and art installations, with much of its terrain still waiting to be discovered. “There’s so much left to uncover here. AlUla is full of hidden gems – places that continue to surprise even those of us who call it home.”

An Unfinished Story

For those seeking luxury, adventure, and authenticity, AlUla – a destination that leaves you yearning for more – offers a rare blend of all three. As Aziz puts it: “AlUla is only beginning to reveal its secrets. Its vast landscapes, historical depths, and artistic endeavours ensure it will continue to captivate the world.”
