While Qatar certainly has its fair share of mega malls, dramatic developments and glitzy skyscrapers, some of the country’s most exciting attractions can be found in its great outdoors. Of course there are the rolling golden dunes of the desert, the beautiful coastline of the Arabian Gulf and plenty of stunning beaches, but there are also lesser-known outdoor activities that make a holiday here really special. Visitors might be surprised to discover lush green mangrove forests, world-class outdoor art installations and vibrant open-air markets too. Sports, culture, tradition and astonishing views are all on offer among these top Qatar outdoor activities.
1. Hit the sand dunes on a desert safari
If outdoor adventure is what you’re after, there’s no greater experience in Qatar than a desert safari. These fun-filled excursions combine culture, tradition and adrenaline-fuelled activities, all against the backdrop of Qatar’s remarkable desert scenery. Most tour operators are based in Doha, picking up travellers and bringing them into the desert (usually around 90 minutes’ drive) in 4x4s. Once you’re among the dunes, the adventure begins with dune bashing, as skilled drivers manoeuvre vehicles up and down steep sandy slopes – heart-racing moments guaranteed.
Sandboarding is another popular safari activity, allowing you to slide down the dunes at top speed on a board, before putting your fitness to the test and clambering back up to the top again. Quad biking and camel riding are also often included, and of course, there are endless photo opportunities among the dunes. Half and full day tours are available. Booking an afternoon safari has the advantage of timing with Qatar’s glorious desert sunsets, when the setting sun casts dramatic shadows across the landscape and the dunes glow in the fading light.
2. Gaze at the Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid)
Fancy a swim in the middle of the desert? One of Qatar’s most beautiful natural wonders, the Inland Sea lies right on the southern edge of the country, and can be visited on an easy day trip from Doha. This UNESCO-recognised reserve, also known as Khor Al Adaid, is an inlet of the Arabian Gulf, and makes for spectacular desert-meets-ocean views. Reaching this remote location is an adventure in itself, as it is only accessible by four-wheel drive through the desert sands.
It’s a must-visit for photographers, wildlife enthusiasts (migratory birds can often be seen swooping across the water), and anyone who appreciates a moment to soak up spectacular scenery. Feel free to take a dip in the water if the mood takes you (swimwear is fine for men and women, but bring cover ups to put on when you’re out of the water – local custom is to cover the shoulders and knees). Many tour operators run excursions out of Doha, or you can hire a driver with a 4X4 to take you. Making the trip alone is not advisable unless you are an experienced desert driver.
3. Paddle through Al Thakira Mangroves
While Qatar is often associated with dry desert landscapes, there’s plenty of greenery to be found if you know where to look. Head to Al Thakira Mangroves, north of Doha to discover this lush coastal ecosystem, where wildlife, such as herons and flamingos, thrives. Exploring Al Thakira by kayak offers a completely new perspective on Qatar’s great outdoors. While only an hour from busy central Doha, the forest feels like a world away, with its gentle birdcalls and overhanging trees. Many local operators offer guided kayaking tours, helping to navigate the waterways and explain the ecological importance of this beautiful natural site.
4. Wander the alleys of Souq Waqif
Souq Waqif, Doha’s iconic market, is an open-air extravaganza of sights, sounds and scents. This traditional-style souq is a treasure trove of cultural experiences, with stalls selling spices and oud, vibrant woven handicrafts, gold jewellery, lamps and other homewares. Don’t miss the falcon souq, where you can see birds being trained and fed, and the Royal Stables where Arabian horses are kept.
Souq Waqif is best visited in the evenings, when the outdoor cafés are packed with diners and street performers entertain the crowds. Grab a table on one of the terraces for a slap-up meal of Khaleeji cuisine or just a hot cup of karak tea and enjoy the cool evening air, the buzz of the marketplace and the chance to people-watch. It’s easy to explore independently, but you can also book a walking tour for a more educational experience of the souq.
5. Relax on Qatar’s beaches
With its long coastline along the Arabian Gulf, Qatar has numerous beautiful public beaches. Katara Beach, which is part of Doha’s cultural district, is a clean and calm pick, and a favourite for families and water sports enthusiasts. Here, you can wade into blue shallow waters or try paddleboarding and kayaking. For those who prefer to leave the city behind, Sealine Beach, just south of Doha, is the perfect escape. It’s situated near the edge of the dunes, meaning you can combine camel rides and desert sports with typical seaside activities.
Fuwairit Beach is a more remote and peaceful shoreline in the far north of Qatar. It’s known for its soft white sand and clear waters and is also a habitat for hawksbill turtles. During nesting season in spring, parts of the beach are fenced off to protect the eggs of this endangered species, but during the rest of the year it’s a peaceful retreat for swimming and strolling.
6. Glide across the Arabian Gulf on a jet ski
Jet skiing along Doha’s waterfront is an absolutely exhilarating ride, with high speeds, the splash of sea water keeping you cool and stunning views of the capital’s skyline to boot. You can hire jet skis from a number of outfits near Doha Marina or further north by the InterContinental Doha Beach & Spa resort. Put on a lifejacket, rev up the engine and then enjoy exploring the bright blue waters around the Corniche and beyond. Morning is often the best time to hit the water, when the sea is calmer, the air is cooler and fewer boats are around.
7. Splash about at a water park
When the temperatures soar but you still want to get outside, Qatar’s adventure parks are the perfect solution. On the west coast (near Salwa Beach Resort), Desert Falls Water & Adventure Park is a family-friendly destination, offering water slides, rides and pools as well as go-karts, climbing walls, and other outdoor activities. Closer to Doha, Lusail’s Meryal Waterpark is packed with water-based attractions including raft slides and wave pools.
