The Italian Navy's iconic training ship, the Amerigo Vespucci, is set to grace the shores of Jeddah from January 27 to 30, 2025.
This historic sailing vessel, often referred to as "the most beautiful ship in the world," is embarking on a global voyage and will make a captivating stop in the vibrant Saudi Arabian city.
Named after the renowned Italian explorer, the Amerigo Vespucci is not just a ship, but a floating museum and a symbol of Italian naval tradition. Launched on February 22, 1931, this three-masted full-rigged ship boasts elegant lines and intricate craftsmanship. During its stay in Jeddah, the ship will be open to the public, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to step aboard and experience a piece of maritime history firsthand - for free.
With its tallest mast standing at 177.2ft tall, the traditionally rigged, three-masted sailing ship is officially classified as a "tall ship," and is the oldest sailing ship in active service in the Italian Navy's fleet.
Although once taking to the high seas to protect the Italian coastline and shores, the Amerigo Vespucci now provides a site for training activities for first-year cadets of the Naval Academy, students of the Military Naval School “F. Morosini,” other naval training institutes. Throughout the summer, young members of sailing associations such as the Lega Navale, the Associazione Nazionale Marinai d’Italia, and the Sail Training Association Italia have the opportunity to join the crew and experience what it is like to work aboard an active tall ship.
Exploring the decks of the Amerigo Vespucci is an unforgettable experience. Visitors can marvel at the intricate rigging, admire the polished brass and gleaming wood, and imagine the life of sailors aboard this magnificent vessel. The ship's crew, comprised of young naval cadets, will be on hand to share their knowledge and answer questions, providing valuable insights into life at sea.
The arrival of the Amerigo Vespucci in Jeddah promises to be a highlight of the city's cultural calendar. This extraordinary vessel serves as a bridge between Italy and Saudi Arabia, fostering cultural exchange and promoting maritime heritage. With free entry, this visit gives guests the rare opportunity to experience and witness a piece of living history, and immersive themselves in the grandeur of this magnificent sailing ship.
